Akron judge in serious condition at Cleveland Clinic

By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer

Akron Municipal Judge Linda Kersker is hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic after falling ill Tuesday night.

Her condition is described as serious.

Kersker, 61, was attending a fundraiser for fellow Judge Stephen Fallis at Sarah's Vineyards in Cuyahoga Falls when she became ill.

About 200 people were in attendance. Kersker was seated in a chair when she became ill. She did not lose consciousness.

Kersker was treated by an Akron firefighter attending the event before Cuyahoga Falls paramedics arrived. She was taken to a local hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to the Cleveland Clinic.

Co-workers say Kersker has been diagnosed with a serious heart condition.

Hospital officials would only confirm that Kersker was being treated.

''All the employees of the Akron Municipal Court and Brouse McDowell pray she is on her feet again soon,'' court administrator Ken Kuckuck said.

Fallis said Kersker was ''healthy and happy'' when she attended a parade with him last weekend.

Kersker and Fallis, each appointed to the bench by Gov. Ted Strickland to fill openings, are up for election this fall.

''I talked to her [Tuesday] night from the hospital and she sounded alert, much better, just a little tired,'' Fallis said. ''Now, I understand it might be more serious.''

Co-workers have scheduled a prayer vigil in her courtroom for noon today, Clerk of Courts Jim Laria said.

Kersker, a former Akron Board of Education member and attorney with Brouse McDowell, was appointed to the bench in February.

She served 16 years on the Akron school board, retiring in 2007 after completing her third term as president. She graduated from Firestone High School in 1965 in the school's first graduating class. The district named the high school auditorium in her honor when she retired from the board.

Retired Judge Marvin Shapiro is handling her docket through the rest of the week.

Phil Trexler can be reached at 330-996-3717 or ptrexler@thebeaconjournal.com.

I've had the pleasure of having a couple of conversations with Judge Kersker and she is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Get well soon, Akron needs more people like you.

Sounds like I'm in the minority here, but who cares? This should concern her family and no one else.

One thing that really bugs me is that people on the public pay roll (her) allow their names to be put on tax payer funded buildings (Firestone auditorium). There are plenty of other graduates and war heroes to name these places after. People sucking off our taxes should not be considered.

Paul,
Get a life!
First of all, as a well-respected and well-liked member of the Akron Business and Legal Community, Judge Kersker has many friends and co-workers who do have an interest in her well-being!

Second, FYI, the Firestone HS auditorium was named in honor of her, an FHS graduate upon her retirement as an Akron School Board member, for the time and valued work she did in her capacity on that board. As the school board is an elected office and the office does not have a salary, what tax money are you even talking about!

Why don't you get a clue, before you comment!

domer - I'm sorry you took this personally. There are plenty of others who wanted to be on the school board, but were not as well connected. Get real - there are personal benefits in these powerful positions. That's why people want these positions!

Paul, you are an uninformed jerk!!!

Posted 02:45 PM, 07/04/2009

This isn't from J Wayne, her husband, but from her daughter. I know that Linda worked her tail off for the last 38 or so years, because I lived with her. She was probably the most giving and generous person I have know, and it saddens me to hear of her public service, which was all from the heart, spoken of in a way that belittles her and makes her out to be somoene who was seeking "benefits". I guess that's fair if you consider working 70-hour weeks and then coming home ot take care of her family and then volunteering gon top of that a "benefit". Incidentally I think that was the benefit for her-helping others.

Shame on you Paul.
May she rest in peace.
