Akron police officers chased down a murder suspect, arresting the man and recovering the revolver they believe was used in the homicide.
Mark Allen Simpson, 45, is in the Summit County Jail on charges of murder, obstructing official business, tampering with evidence, carrying a concealed weapon and illegal possession of a weapon.
He is accused in Wednesday night's shooting death of Michael Pittman, 45, of Seventh Avenue in Akron.
Simpson is to be arraigned this morning in Akron Municipal Court.
Pittman was found by police about 10:50 p.m. on a sofa inside a house in the 900 block of Baird Street where Simpson lived. Pittman had a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Pittman was taken to Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.
His mother, Gloria Bethune, de
clined comment Thursday.
Within an hour of the shooting, Akron police received a tip that Pittman's assailant was in an East Akron neighborhood.
Officers found Simpson less than a mile away near Third Avenue and Fuller Street, where they said he ditched a five-shot revolver and fled.
He was captured after a short foot chase, Capt. Daniel Zampelli said.
Court records show that Simpson was arrested in April and charged with trafficking cocaine. He is scheduled to stand trial in August in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
His attorney in the drug case, Eddie Sipplen, said he was unaware of the murder charge and could not comment.
Pittman's death is the city's second homicide this week and the sixth this year. It comes amid a recent spate of home invasions and shootings, particularly on the city's east side.
Police are trying to determine the events that preceded Pittman's shooting, including whether it could be related to a drive-by shooting Monday night on Fuller Street that left one man dead and four others wounded.
No suspects have been identified.
Donald Baker, 48, of Akron, was killed in that shooting.
Antwoine Sheffield, 23, is listed in critical condition at an area hospital with injuries to his head and back.
On Tuesday, Akron police recovered a charred SUV they believe was used in the Monday incident. The silver 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was found several miles away from the shooting site, near Sunset View Drive and Greenwood Avenue on the city's west side.
