Butler County man, 40, had health problems that may have contributed, department says

The death of a Butler County man is the state's first linked to swine flu.
The 40-year-old patient from southwestern Ohio had underlying health problems that may have contributed to his death Monday, the Ohio Department of Health said Thursday.
There have been 127 H1N1 virus deaths in the United States and 332 worldwide as cases continue to spread around the globe.
In June, the World Health Organization declared the first flu pandemic in 41 years.
The virus was first detected in April in Mexico and the United States.
Most patients have experienced typical, seasonal flu symptoms and recovered without medical treatment, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Statewide, 127 confirmed cases of the virus have been reported as of Thursday.
In the Akron-Canton area there have been 10 confirmed cases six in Summit County, two in Stark County, one in Portage County and one in Wayne County. Medina County has had none.
Cuyahoga County has had 32 confirmed cases.
''Our hearts go out to this man's family and loved ones,'' said Dr. Alvin D. Jackson, director of the Ohio Department of Health. ''This is a sad, and not entirely unexpected event as influenza and its complications cause some 3,000 deaths annually in Ohio, ranking it among the top 10 causes of death.''
Citing patient confidentiality, the health department would not release details about the Butler County man.
Health officials are continuing to urge people to follow good hygiene to keep from contracting and spreading the H1N1 influenza, as well as other viral illnesses.
Among their common-sense advice: Wash hands, cover coughs, keep away from people who are ill and stay home if sick.
Symptoms of H1N1 are similar to those of seasonal flu.
