Rootstown man, 68, beaten, robbed at home

Beacon Journal staff report

A 68-year-old Portage County man was taken by helicopter to Akron City Hospital Thursday after two men assaulted him on his front porch, then entered his house and stole coins from a collection.

The incident began when a woman arrived at the victim's Rootstown Township home at 2:30 a.m., said she was having car problems and asked to use the phone, the Portage County Sheriff's Office said.

While the woman was on the phone, the victim went outside because two men had shown up on his porch.

The men beat the victim, entered the home, stole coins and left in a car driven by a third man, the sheriff's office said.

An off-duty Ravenna police officer working security at the Giant Eagle on East Main Street in Ravenna helped to apprehend two of the suspects as they allegedly were trying to cash in the coins. The officer had been monitoring police radio traffic and had heard that a large amount of coins had been stolen, said sheriff's Lt. Gregory Johnson.

Facing charges of of felonious assault and aggravated burglary are Jodi Fetty, 27, of Diamond; Cortez Oliver, 20, of Fairlawn; Jonathan Dukes, 23, of Ravenna; and Darrell L. Dukes, 21, of Ravenna. They are in the Portage County Jail and are to be arraigned Monday at the Ravenna branch of Portage County Municipal Court.

If that old man had a gun we'd be having some funerals, but instead our taxes will pay for trial & defense & incarceration. Gun control huh??? No were in the article did it state the perps had guns.

Maybe if he'd had a gun, they would have taken it away and used it on him, then on someone else. Guns are not a solution, they are tools.

By the way, I know this man, his son is a friend. He would much more appreciate that people simply wish him well.

I agree with jameswroscoe. I know Mr. Lowther's son, also, and I know that they are a good family who has been crushed by this event. NO ONE deserves this!
