Sites to collect hazardous waste

By Bob Downing
Beacon Journal staff reporter

The Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District will collect household hazardous waste and computer-electronics equipment four times in August and September.

Acceptable materials include paint, motor oil, wax, polishes, solvents, vehicle fluids, weed killers, stains, fertilizers, paint thinners, aerosol cans and household batteries.

Electronics equipment that can be recycled includes computers, monitors, modems, printers, power supplies, cell phones and televisions.

Unacceptable materials include ammunition, explosives, appliances, radioactive and infectious waste, medicine and pressurized cylinders.

Collection dates are:

• Aug. 13-15, Stark State College, 6200 Frank Ave. NW, Jackson Township.

• Aug. 20-22, Buckeye Career Center, 545 University Drive NE, New Philadelphia.

• Aug. 27-29, Wayne College outside Orrville. Materials should go to the old Orrville Airport off North Crown Hill Road.

• Sept. 17-19, Timken Co. plant at 20th Street Southwest at Dueber Avenue in Canton.

Each collection will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2008, the district handled about 1,286 tons from 15,001 vehicles in the three counties. That included 9,778 vehicles and 691 tons from Stark County; 1,923 vehicles and 178 tons from Tuscarawas County; and 3,300 vehicles and 417 tons from Wayne County.

Cincinnati-based Environmental Enterprises Inc. will recycle the waste, said district spokesman Lennie Broom.

The collections cost the three-county garbage district just under $1 million a year, depending on the volume, he said.

For questions, contact the garbage district at 330-874-2258 or 800-678-9839 or go to http://www.timetorecycle.org/reshazardtwo.php.
