Copley man drowns on holiday

By Beacon Journal staff

COPLEY TWP.:The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office and Copley police are investigating the Fourth of July drowning of Thomas Griebel.

A spokesman for the medical examiner's office said Griebel, 48, of the 4000 block of Ridgewood Road, and friends jumped into a pond at his home Saturday evening.

''When Mr. Griebel went under water and failed to come up, friends called for help,'' the spokesman said.

The Copley Fire and Police departments and divers from Bath Township and Summit County responded and searched the area. The dive team found the body shortly after midnight.

Griebel was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:34 a.m. Sunday.

An autopsy is scheduled.

Twenty fire and rescue personnel and five police officers were on scene. Other fire departments assisting were Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, Green and New Franklin.

That will surely put a damper on any holdiay festivities. Wonder if he had "the big one" before he hit the water??

Terrible thing, condolences to the family and friends...
This happened to someone I knew, but it occurred in a larger lake. The water temp was quite cold in the spot where he jumped in. The cold shock constricted the ateries and took him out. It was summer, would think the water would be warm enough...dunno...

Tragic.

Zerodps, Probably a somewhat large pond with dark murky water. When somebody is missing in a body of water, and can't be easily found a dive team is called in. That is how things are done.

To Zerodps: It was late at night -- very dark and ponds can be quite deep.

@Brickman....I just don't understand how you drown in a pond?? No waves, undertoe, etc....If he didn't know how to swim why jump in?

hey golfer 36--did you ever stop to think that this person has a wife, a mother and family? do you not have anything better to do with your time than sit around and make hurtful comments to those that are left behind???

Yea and thats why you dont drink and go swimming after dark. SO you think he displayed responsible behavior? Really??

Golfer-who are you to judge? Whatever the perceived cause, it is a tragedy. I hope you and your family never experience such a difficult loss. They are blessed to have someone as perfect as you. "There but for the grace of God go I".

Golfer - I agree with SSA1566...

The article doesn't say he was drinking or that he couldn't swim. It was dark and late. He could have had a reaction to the cold water. He could have hit his head on something when he jumped in. He could have got tangled in weeds and been unable to surface. Could be lots of things - but does it really matter?

Why not give him the benefit of the doubt and accept it as a tragic accident?

I am shocked to read the inconsiderate posts on here...

Tom was a dear friend and it hurts to read what total strangers are assuming/speculating as to happened.

Family and friends are grieving over this tragedy...be kinder with your words please.
