Heat gun starts fire

AKRON: A house caught fire Sunday when a heat gun was used to strip paint from an exterior wall.

The Akron Fire Department was called to the house in the 1000 block of Amelia Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a report by the department.

The fire did an estimated $25,000 damage to the home valued at $150,000.

There were no injuries reported. No one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist residents displaced by the fire.

Two men assaulted
AKRON: Detectives are investigating separate assaults in the Kenmore area that landed two men in the hospital over the weekend.

In one incident, police found a 23-year-old man bleeding from the head outside the Whiskey River Bar, 2268 East Ave., about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man told police he was struck in the head with a baseball bat during a fight outside the bar.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, a 51-year-old man was found outside the Boulevard Lounge, 995 Kenmore Blvd., also bleeding from the head.

Both men were taken to Akron General Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information on either assault is asked to contact the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490.

CANTON

High bonds set

CANTON: Multimillion-dollar bonds have been set for two suspects in the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl in her northeast Canton home.

Bond was set at $15 million for the alleged triggerman, Maki Ragland, 20, of Canton. Bond is $10 million for William Ferguson, 21, also of Canton.

Both men were arraigned Monday in Canton Municipal Court. Both face charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated murder.

Police say the men entered the girl's home Thursday night and demanded money. The toddler, Harmoney Sankey, was shot and killed, and her grandfather was assaulted and shot in the leg.

LAFAYETTE TWP.

Tractor death

LAFAYETTE TWP.: An 81-year-old Cuyahoga County man was killed just before 3:30 p.m. Monday when the tractor he was riding rolled off an embankment and landed on top of him.

Authorities say the victim was working on property he owned on Chippewa Road.

No further information was released.

MEDINA COUNTY

Jury award

MEDINA: A Medina County jury has awarded $51,429 to a woman injured in a crash in 2003.

The jury in Common Pleas Court Judge James Kimbler's court returned the verdict Monday. The trial, which had recessed for the holiday weekend, lasted two days.

The jury awarded the money to Holly Donovan, who had sued the estate of James Richard Taylor, who died after the accident from an unrelated cause.

Donovan said the crash caused an aggravation of a pre-existing back injury.

Tax appeals
MEDINA: Saying he wants to ensure entitled property owners get a reduction in their property taxes in 2010, Medina County Auditor Michael Kovack said his office will accept real estate valuation appeals between now and Aug. 1.

Packages should be sent to the auditor's office with actual market sales of similar type homes in the neighborhood. Those can be found at http://www.medinacountyauditor.org by clicking on ''transfers.''

Appraisals from refinances are also helpful. Also, indicate if there are any unique features of the home that might detract from its value.

Due to a lack of staff, there will be no in-person hearings for informal appeals. Property owners will still have the opportunity to formally appeal their value to the Medina County Board of Revision between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31 next year.

If a change is made, a notice will be sent in November. If there is no change, property owners will receive no notice.

Packages should be sent to Kovack at 144 N. Broadway St., Medina, 44256 or they can be dropped off during business hours.

To call in Medina, 330-725- 9754; Brunswick, 330-225-7100, ext. 9754; or Wadsworth, 330-336-6657, ext. 9754.

NORTHEAST OHIO

Free health care

CLEVELAND: A free health-care event scrapped in early May because of swine flu concerns has been rescheduled for later this month.

Doctors, nurses, dentists and various specialists will provide their services to the uninsured and underinsured at no charge July 25 and 26 in the University Circle area of east Cleveland.

Patients will need to call to schedule a timed appointment at either of two locations.

Medical professionals originally had planned to hold a free health-care festival at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds during the first weekend in May. But that was when swine flu worries were rising, and state health officials said it probably wasn't a good idea to bring together thousands of people, including many with health problems.
