'Transformers' haul speeds to $300 million

Worldwide revenue also reaches impressive level

From Beacon Journal wire services

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has reached another Hollywood milestone.

The sci-fi blockbuster shot past the $300 million mark domestically on Tuesday — after just 14 days in release.

That makes it the second-fastest movie to top $300 million, behind last summer's The Dark Knight, which made it in 10 days.

The Transformers sequel also has topped $600 million worldwide. The movie is closing in on the $319 million domestic total of the first Transformers installment in 2007, as well as the original flick's $700 million worldwide total.

Dr. Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey is not a doctor, but he plays one on TV — and now in the movies.

Dempsey has joined the cast of New Line's romantic comedy Valentine's Day, being directed by Garry Marshall.

The ensemble already includes Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Emma Roberts and Hector Elizondo.

Valentine's, which begins shooting this week, follows five slightly interconnecting stories playing out in Los Angeles during Valentine's Day.

Dempsey will play a married obstetrician dating Garner's character on the sly, with her unaware of his status.

Dempsey, one of the stars of ABC's Grey's Anatomy, most recently appeared on the big screen in the 2008 romantic comedy Made of Honor.

Classic rewrite

Randall Wallace (Braveheart) will rewrite Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney's take on the classic Jules Verne story. McG is directing.

Nemo, planned as an action-adventure movie, will tell of the origin of Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. Wallace is squeezing in the Nemo writing gig before he directs Secretariat, starring Diane Lane. The racehorse drama is set to begin shooting in September.
