Take, for instance, Susan and Rick Bisgyer, whose wares from their Ridgetop Pottery will be displayed in Booth 60.
Susan's dad, Akronite John H. Ramey, wrote to say that the Bisgyers have participated in both the Akron Arts Expo and Ohio Mart since starting a pottery business in Kingwood, W.Va.
Susan graduated from Buchtel High School in 1977 and Ohio State with a bachelor of fine arts in ceramics in 1981. She also attended Rankin Elementary and Perkins Middle School.
Her love of ceramics began at the former Model Cities arts center, in a city-owned storefront south of Cedar Street. Rick is also a potter, specializing in large decorative ware.
Ramey said Susan was born in Chicago and they lived a block and a half south of the Obamas' house there, on the same street. Until moving to Akron, Susan attended the same school the Obama children attended.
The Bisgyers' Web site is http://www.ridgetoppottery.com
Admission to the Akron Arts Expo is free. A free shuttle service will take visitors from the Firestone High School parking lot to see the 160 juried exhibitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
There's also an interactive children's area and a Kids Coloring Contest. The Expo is preceded by two events:
• Tonight's 6 to 10 p.m. Taste of Akron — also free admission — with more than 25 of the area's best restaurants presenting dishes. A Finest Cut Steak Cook-off tops the evening.
• 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, wine tasting and silent auction, featuring more than 150 wines and beers, hors d'oeuvres and entertainment. Tickets are $40, $75 couples. Ballet Theatre of Ohio performs at 8:45 p.m.
