Tabulating Akron recall cost

Plusquellic backers donate nearly $300,000; opposition raises only $7,300

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Supporters of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic contributed nearly $300,000 to help keep him in office.

Change Akron Now, the group that mounted the unsuccessful recall campaign against Plusquellic, raised a fraction of that amount: about $7,300.

Both sides filed post-election finance reports Friday afternoon with the Summit County Board of Elections.

Nearly 75 percent of the voters June 23 rejected the recall.

Citizens for Akron and Vote Against the Recall.com — pro-Plusquellic campaign committees — raised $260,637 and $34,100, respectively.

Plusquellic said Friday he appreciated the people who helped defeat the recall, either through donations, volunteering or both. He said he received an ''outpouring of support.''

''This was something we had to do,'' he said.

Among the larger contributors to Citizens for Akron listed in the latest campaign finance report were Anthony Alexander, president and chief executive of FirstEnergy Corp., with $18,000; Goodyear, with $10,000; Signet Enterprises of Akron, with $5,000; and Kenmore Construction of Akron, with $3,500.

Elizabeth Bartz, chief executive of State and Federal Communications Inc. in Akron, an information source on campaigns and lobbying, was the treasurer of Vote Against the Recall.com.

The group's top contributors, in its latest report, included Perantinedes and Nolan, an Akron law firm, with $2,500; GOJO of Akron, with $2,500; and Princeton Environmental Group of Akron, with $2,000.

There is no donation limit
on issue campaigns, officials said.

Warner Mendenhall, the attorney and former Akron councilman who led the recall effort, said all along he expected his group to be significantly outspent.

''He gathered his forces, and that's how it works,'' Mendenhall said of the mayor.

Mendenhall was the biggest contributor in the group's latest report, giving $750. The group received small donations from citizens, including several of just $5.

Mendenhall said the group ''spent every dime'' and he actually needs to deposit some funds to pay an outstanding bill. The committee's ending balance on its report was $0.31.

Change Akron Now spent most of its funds in its latest report on phone calling by Homeytel, a communications firm in San Diego. Other expenses included mailing costs and $110 to Country Diner, an East Market Street restaurant, for a fundraiser.

In Citizens for Akron's latest report, the biggest expenses were for services by Jonathan Varner and Associates, a communications firm in Columbus, and Cookson Research Consulting in Winter Park, Fla., for polling.

Vote Against the Recall.com spent all of its money, with most going to Triad Communications Inc. in Cuyahoga Falls, an advertising and marketing firm.

Citizens for Akron had about $3,700 left over.

Tom Reynolds, Citizens for Akron's campaign manager, said it hasn't been decided what to do with these funds or the group's future. There has been discussion of the committee remaining intact and getting involved in the upcoming Akron City Council races.

''We are still deciding and evaluating what we're going to do,'' Reynolds said. ''We honestly don't know yet.''

Mendenhall said Change Akron Now isn't going away. The group has been sending out blast e-mails and posting information on its Web site, mostly focusing on Akron's budget woes.

The city has a projected $12 million shortfall that must be made up by the end of the year. The city imposed its first layoffs in 27 years this week.

''We are going to track the issues we raised and see who gets proven truthful,'' Mendenhall said.

If you go on changeakronnow.com you will see new evidence that Plusquellic used his campaign account to pay for entourage travel to LA and to stay in the Hyatt. There are more trips that will be posted to Europe and elsewhere. Plusquellic charged his trip cost to the City so the taxpayers foot the bill. Plusquellic's campaign refused to follow election law (again) and release these documents. They did so after the recall because they knew it would show Plusquellic to be a Liar. Plusquellic's illegal use of campaign funds and conversion to personal use avoids paying fedral income tax on ill begotten money, he is a tax cheat. This has been going on for six years but noone has picked up on it until now.

The Beacon refuses to do a story on it and will remove this posting.

It's nice to see a list of the top contributors, but it wasn't surprisin'. All are beneficiaries of the city hall hero stayin' in office.

My question to Goodyear:

"Iff'n keepin' the city hall hero in office is important to them, $10,000 worth, how important are the taxpayers of Akron who are payin' over $100 million to keep them here. Do we get a rebate too??"

Do they have a line item for how much those billboards cost? Seems since they suddenly appeared here in Akron the only advertising I've seen done on them is from politicians (funny how politicians can afford to advertise on them but regular businesses can't), then there's the display screens on all the bar machines...............people are funny here on this planet!

there's a lot of things the Beacon likes to ignore or refuse to investigate. I wish they did more rabble-rousing. A little controversy would make this paper more interesting, instead of a seeming branch of the Mayor's office. They certainly can bring the hate to push their agenda...my current favorite is the lack of reporting on July being the deadliest month for US/Coalition forces in the entire 8 year war in Afghanistan. Under Bush that would be front page news for a week.

I'm still shocked they allowed Bob Dyer's article about what's really happening in Akron's neighborhoods. Maybe they could do a series of stories about that, like the Vinson shooting.

will he deposit the funds after he pays his deadbeat dad money or the back taxes he owes that we all have to cover...you have to say one thing about the guy..he has no care about what is right for him to do..just what is right for others, if it is his way...guy is a joke

Ty you've obviously never been anywhere other than downtown. Spend an afternoon in one of Akron's formerly decent working class neighborhoods. You''l be shocked ( I assume ) at the open air drug markets, boarded up houses and general disarray. Sorry for being a crybaby, but I care about Akron and want it to be a better place, for everybody. I think the Mayor obviously cares about the city but I don't like all the effort and $ spent on downtown while the neighborhoods flounder.

TyDurden

Posted 11:43 AM, 08/01/2009

hey Grubby
if you are talking about the formerly "decent working class" neighborhoods, maybe you are thinking way back to the early 1900's when Goodyear thrived.
And Yes I have been in those neightborhoods, I work in those neighborhoods and the work I do I am certain i have seen much worse than you ever will in your life. I too care about Akron, but I refrain from crying a river and doing nothing about it after that.

Logial American

Posted 01:28 PM, 08/01/2009

As i said the other day, how much money did Goodyear kick back to the Don for all the money he stole from the neighborhoods to pretty up their headquarters? I'd wager that he pocketed a dollar for every political dollar he claimed. Most all of the companies listed in helping him buy his safety have also been laying off employees. Again, why would someone spend 300,000 to keep a 100,000 job? He plans to steal it all back. As for the Beacon, it isnt even an American owned company anymore. What makes you think they care what happens? They lost all their real writers to the Plain Dealer (at least those with talent), with one exception: Bob Dyer.

I guess it will take a racist gang beating or home invasion of Donny-Boi's supporters for them to realize he is doing nothing for them. They seem to feel as long as it happens to someone else, it doesnt affect me. They will still follow him to the bowels of Akron's hell, like lemmings.

Face it Akron.... you are now a bigger laughing stock than Cleveland ever was, and your Mayor is why.

Besides, no one can logically compare the two time periods as the area, the state, and the world have all went through drastic change in 20 years. If you are stuck on the "good ol' days", you have more than just our city administration that must be stressing you out.

Clinton working with a Republican Congress.Signed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which removed Depression-era laws separating banking, insurance and brokerage activities.Dec.2007 Start seeing the affects of it.Total collapse of the markets.Bush unpaid for war.One in which had nothing to do with 9/11(Iraq).The story of today’s deficits starts in January 2001, as President Bill Clinton was leaving office. The Congressional Budget Office estimated then that the government would run an average annual surplus of more than $800 billion a year from 2009 to 2012. Today, the government is expected to run a $1.2 trillion annual deficit in those years. You can think of that roughly $2 trillion swing as coming from four broad categories: the business cycle, President George W. Bush’s policies, policies from the Bush years that are scheduled to expire but that Mr. Obama has chosen to extend, and new policies proposed by Mr. Obama.

stephend6
AKRON, OH

Posted 09:38 PM, 08/01/2009

The first category — the business cycle — accounts for 37 percent of the $2 trillion swing. It’s a reflection of the fact that both the 2001 recession and the current one reduced tax revenue, required more spending on safety-net programs and changed economists’ assumptions about how much in taxes the government would collect in future years.

About 33 percent of the swing stems from new legislation signed by Mr. Bush. That legislation, like his tax cuts and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, not only continue to cost the government but have also increased interest payments on the national debt.

Mr. Obama’s main contribution to the deficit is his extension of several Bush policies, like the Iraq war and tax cuts for households making less than $250,000. Such policies — together with the Wall Street bailout, which was signed by Mr. Bush and supported by Mr. Obama — account for 20 percent of the swing.

About 7 percent comes from the stimulus bill that Mr. Obama signed in February. And only 3 percent comes from Mr. Obama’s agenda on health care, education, energy and other areas.

stephend6
AKRON, OH

Posted 09:40 PM, 08/01/2009

If the analysis is extended further into the future, well beyond 2012, the Obama agenda accounts for only a slightly higher share of the projected deficits.

How can that be? Some of his proposals, like a plan to put a price on carbon emissions, don’t cost the government any money. Others would be partly offset by proposed tax increases on the affluent and spending cuts. Congressional and White House aides agree that no large new programs, like an expansion of health insurance, are likely to pass unless they are paid for.Alan Auerbach, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an author of a widely cited study on the dangers of the current deficits, describes the situation like so: “Bush behaved incredibly irresponsibly for eight years.

Gain Some, Unfortunately, Donny destroys all his receipts to cover his tracks which is a violation of public record law. He fails to record meals, hotels, and plane flights on his Ohio Ethic's Reprot, again to cover his tracks and again against the law. He doesn't pay tax on the money he shifts from his campaign to his personal use in violation of tax laws. We are reporting all findings to various law enforcement agencies.

We are attempting to get more documents from Board of Elections, but we are being stonewalled by political hack, Executive Director Marijean Donafrio and her leader and Board member and Roetzel Attorney, Political Lobbyist, Wayne "The Wiener" Jones.

The Beacon claims they are too busy with council election endorsements to write a story, which is comical since all they are going to do is rubber stamp the rubber stampers (council). If the Beacon does not go along with Don's agenda, all H breaks loose.

Gain, Donny took a fanstatic trip to LA to attend a conference of Mayor's bash. Donny can't float his entourage payments out of the city treasury, so he uses his campaign fund. He labels his entourage travel on his campaign reports as "travel expenses" he does not itemise as required. The political hack, Rose Deborg, who revies these reports lets Donny slide. One of the speakers in LA was convict Detroit Mayor and the other was rejected Obama cabinet member, Bill Richardson, along with the White House silverware stealer, HiLIARy.

On April 17, 2008, Donny's campaign fund was short, so he went to the Summit County Democratic Party to fund his credit card payment. The SCDP wrote him a donation of $5000. and on the same day the Plusquellic Campaign issued a check to First Merit for Donny's campaign Visa in the amount of $4500.

Both checks were signed by an excutive of the SCDP.
It has happend more than twice.

Gain, Donny can't shake the paper trail.

@McDonald, so far I have not seen evidence that points to wring doing. If I had, he would be convicted for his actions.

Credit card statements alone are not evidence of wrong doing. It takes other documents and evidence to pull everything together.

I was just asking you what other information you had. I am not supporting the mayor. If you read my comments, I did not say he was innocent or guilty. I wanted to see what other analysis and information your accumulated and analyzed.

Rather than sharing your information and analysis, so that I or others can support your view, you have decided that name calling is your method of communication. You are demonstrating the same technique and the reason that the recall failed. You cannot post a single document and hope people make the same analysis of it as you. And name calling really does not gain support. I would think the mayor has proved that to you already.

@Karykzen, the money raised was NOT for the city. The city still had expenses. The money raised mentioned this article was solely in support of the mayor and related advertising.

Warner Mendenhall contributed $750 to the pro-recall campaign? WTF, this guy owes thousands of dollars in back taxes , why does he have any money left to donate to anything? What a crook!

According to McDonald there is plenty of evidence, and it has all been produced. So just like the Cuyahoga County case we should start seeing reports of the FBI involvment. Serving search warrants at offices and homes of city/county offficials. Seizing records. People being charged and agreeing to cooperate with the investigation of "Mr Big" (Mayor Don). Yep, I'm sure it will be on the 11 o'clock news tonight. Or does the mayor control all the local major network news stations too?

Gain some, great reply to Karykzen, I couldn't believe somebody read this article and thought that the city collected $300,000.

Karykzen. According to some people the Mayor is the city.It will not survive without him.So I can see why a person can get confused.like I posted on 10:13 AM, 08/02/2009. My family moved on the west side (ward 4)in 1969.I've seen what Don policies has done to ward 4 and now (ward 8).Him and Marco was fighting Mike Williams about the noise ordinance stating Mike and others was picking on the black kids.because people did not want to hear that noise from their cars(Some of them 4-5 city blocks it could be heard)It was reported by HOWIE on W N I R That MARCO pushed some lady in the public meeting.HOWIE and our west side block club went down to the next monday meeting.HOWIE told Marco push me like you pushed that lady that called in to my show.I told him he better start worrying about getting bodies in his funeral home and stop acting stupid about picking on these black kids,People have to work.We got it passed that night with an 30day start period.See I don't have to ask any family members. I was there.
