Interim director chosen to take reins

Cleveland Museum of Art hires Deborah Gribbon as it searches for current supervisor's successor

The Cleveland Museum of Art must be breathing a sigh of relief after announcing last week that former J. Paul Getty Museum Director Deborah Gribbon will come on board Sept. 14 as interim director, taking the reins from Timothy Rub, who leaves Sept. 21 to become the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Gribbon has agreed to lead the Cleveland Museum of Art for about a year as it searches for a successor to Rub, who is leaving after only three years to succeed longtime Philadelphia Museum of Art director Anne d'Harnoncourt, who died last year.

Gribbon, 61, a Harvard-educated art historian, joined the Getty as assistant director for Curatorial Affairs in 1984 after an eight-year curatorial stint at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

She went to Los Angeles at the behest of then-Getty director John Walsh. She was made deputy director and chief curator in 1998 and was responsible for the day-to-day management of the museum, becoming director when Walsh retired in 2000.

During her tenure Gribbon acquired more than 500 works, including paintings by Titian, Degas and Monet. She also redefined the museum's approach to education and added a multimedia system for providing information to visitors.

A specialist in French 19th century paintings, Gribbon is the author of various articles and was co-author, with Walsh, of The J. Paul Getty Museum and its Collections: A Museum for the New Century.

In addition to having been director at the Getty for four years, Gribbon was vice president of the J. Paul Getty Trust, where she came into conflict with trust CEO Barry Munitz. Gribbon left in 2004, citing professional differences with Munitz.

Gribbon will not be a candidate for the permanent position, having agreed with the Cleveland Museum of Art board of trustees that's how she can be most effective as interim director. One of her roles will be to serve as an adviser for the director search, museum officials said.
