Visitors bureau pledges $100,000 for Gay Games

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

The Akron/Summit County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pledging $100,000 to bolster Northeast Ohio's bid to host the 2014 Gay Games.

The tourism group would be foolish not to financially back the event, considering it could have more than a $60 million economic impact on the region, bureau President Susan Hamo said Wednesday.

The money would be spent on event marketing and promotion only if the Cleveland Synergy Foundation is successful in bringing the games here, she said.

Cleveland, Boston and Washington, D.C., are the finalists, with the winner being announced Sept. 29.

Earlier this week, Cleveland City Council approved a $700,000 grant for the sporting event, which is held every four years.

The Cleveland Synergy Foundation is ecstatic with the financial support, and it shows the community's desire to host the games, said W. Douglas Anderson of the foundation. The group also is waiting to hear back about potential commitments from Akron and Summit County, he said.

Although Cleveland is the official host, Akron would play a large role in the event.

Firestone Country Club has volunteered to host the men's and women's golf tournaments. Softball games would be held at Firestone Stadium. Rodeo events would be at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge. And the marathon would be held in Akron.

''It would be the largest event Akron would ever see,'' Anderson said.

The competition could lure up to 65,000 athletes and spectators to Northeast Ohio, organizers say.
