Road repairs
MACEDONIA: Valley View Road at Cliffview Drive will be closed between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday to replace a failing roadway drainage culvert.
Homes and businesses north of Cliffview Drive can only use state Route 82 for access and cannot go south on Valley View Road. Homes and businesses south of Cliffview Drive can only use Highland Road for access and cannot go past or onto Cliffview Drive.

Social services chief named
AKRON: Sharon Geffken has been named deputy executive director of social services at Summit County Children Services.
She had been serving as interim deputy since January.
''Sharon brings strong leadership skills to this critical position, as well as a deep commitment to best practices, children and families, the community, and the agency,'' Children Services Executive Director John Saros said in a prepared statement.
Geffken, 53, of Akron has a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Akron, and a master's in social administration from Case Western Reserve University. She is a licensed independent social worker.
She began her career in child welfare at Summit County Children Services in 1986 and was a member of the agency's first training unit.
Her salary is $92,000.

Scam warning
AKRON: The Summit County Consumer Affairs Office is warning residents about a new telephone scam offering gift certificates and free vacations.
County residents are receiving the calls now and being urged to hand over personal bank account information to redeem the prizes.
Con artists are using gimmicks such as prizes to lure consumers into believing the offers are legitimate, the county said. Often, callers claim to have an affiliation with the government, large chain or department stores, banks, and credit card companies.
The county urged residents to notify authorities when they receive such calls. The county Consumer Affairs Office can be reached at 330-643-2879.
Successful drive
AKRON.: Alumni of Leadership Akron raised $540,000 to complete the organization's 25th anniversary endowment campaign.
The fund-raising drive was aided by a GAR Foundation challenge grant that provided $1 for every $2 raised.
Other foundations that assisted were the Brennan Family Foundation and the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.
The drive topped its goal of $500,000 by $40,000, officials said Friday in announcing the results.
The leadership program involves 34 participants in a year-long program to develop a broad Akron perspective in young potential leaders.
Hope Lights the Way
AKRON: Akron Children's Hospital is hosting its annual Hope Lights the Way cancer awareness event at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The event will be in Perkins Square Park on the hospital campus in downtown Akron.
People can pay tribute to friends and loved ones, living or deceased, by having a luminary dedicated to the person for free.
To dedicate a luminary, pick up a form at the hospital's Human Resources Department or call event chair Marianne Sander at 330-543-8335.
The event also will include inspirational messages, refreshments and entertainment.
Free parking will be available in the Bowery Street Parking Deck.

Goodwill tours
AKRON: Goodwill Industries of Akron will host a series of open houses.
Donors, shoppers, volunteers and others interested in a behind-the-scenes tour of local Goodwill operations are invited to 570 E. Waterloo Road in Akron from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Guests will visit Goodwill's main warehouse to see the process for accepting, sorting, selling, salvaging and recycling donations. Tours will begin every 15 minutes.

Goodwill operates 11 stores in Summit, Portage, Medina, Ashland, and Richland counties. The agency uses the net proceeds from the sale of donations to help clients find and retain jobs.

AKRON: The Akron and Summit County Federation of Women's Clubs will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. for a luncheon and program on ''Dracula's Castle,'' the tourist attraction in Transylvania.
The event — at the First United Methodist Church at 263 E. Mill St. is open to the public.

A heated topic
AKRON: Mike Freeman, Ward 9 councilman, will have a ward meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenmore Senior Community Center, 880 Kenmore Blvd.
The topic will be Summit County's Home Weatherization Assistance Program, which provides grants to low-income residents for improvements to help lower energy costs.
WADSWORTH
Talk on space life
WADSWORTH: NASA Glenn Research Center's Bill Crell will discuss Living and Working in Space at 4 p.m. Friday at the Wadsworth Public Library,
The presentation — for all ages — will focus on how astronauts live and work in the International Space Station and feature experiments demonstrating jet propulsion.
Crell also will bring along a space suit for audience members to try on.

Pancakes to flip
FAIRFIELD TWP.: Camp Tuscazoar will have its Fall Flapjack Flip pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the camp, 6066 Boy Scout Road NE at county Road 83, two miles east of Zoar.
Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.
WOOSTER
Biotech grant
WOOSTER: An Ohio company is getting a $500,000 federal grant to help finance an anaerobic digester at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.
The grant, arranged by U.S. Rep. John Boccieri, D-Alliance, will help Schmack Biogas install the $3 million plant to turn manure, crops and farm waste into electricity and into a gas to heat buildings.
The project earlier had gotten a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development.
The plant will be built in the BioHio Research Park off Secrest Road. The company has set up a research facility at the Wooster complex.
Schmack Biogas also turns compost from Akron's sewage plant into electricity.
