Summit County councilman declines pay cut

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

Summit County Councilman Tim Crawford, a vocal critic of county spending, won't take a voluntary pay cut this year like his fellow council members.

Council has agreed to give up 6.6 percent of its pay for the remainder of the year as the county grapples with a $14 million operating shortfall. Council members have said it's important to show county workers — many of whom are being asked to take a four-day furlough — that they are willing to share in the financial pain.

But Crawford, who is paid $23,903 a year, said his county check is committed through this year to buying state retirement benefits — a perk afforded to government workers to boost their retirement income and health benefits. His check amounts to $23.50 every two weeks because of the payroll deduction, he said.

The voluntary pay cut amounts to about $60 withheld from each council member's check.

If he agreed to the pay cut, ''I would have to pay the county money to be working,'' said Crawford, who works full-time as an insurance agent. ''I'm not going to write out a check.''

Crawford, a Democrat and former Norton mayor, has been on County Council since 1993. He serves as head of the council's Finance Committee and has been a frequent critic of county leaders not trimming their spending.

He said he will participate in a proposed 8 percent voluntary pay cut next year, when county leaders say workers might be asked to take up to 20 days off without pay.

''Next year, I will be right in line to sign my 8 percent away,'' said Crawford, a district council member who represents Barberton, Norton, New Franklin, Clinton and parts of Coventry Township and Akron.

Council President Nick Kostandaras said he was disappointed in Crawford's decision. The other 10 council members have agreed to the pay cut.

''What can you say?'' Kostandaras said. ''He has to deal with it himself. I've got to show an example.''

The county plans to use reserve funds to plug the operating budget shortfall this year but still wants to reduce spending because tax revenues are declining.

County Executive Russ Pry has announced he wants to trim $9 million in spending next year. County leaders are still working on the 2010 budget.

What arrogance!
The only thing that compounds his arrogance is the fact that elected official get "2 for 1" in the OPERS pension benefits column.
In other words one year of political employment counts as 2 years!
So 15 years on the dole gets you a 30 year pension!

You must not be familiar with the rules. If a politician is caught in a scandal, and you cant find their part affiliation mentioned in the article, they are a democrat. If "republican" is mentioned in a report about a scandal, its typically used as the person's first name.

Am I to understand that his pay is less than $25.00 every two weeks because the rest of his pay is socked away for retirement and health benefits. I wouldn't admit to this if I were he. Politians forget how the real world works. In fact everyone paid by our tax dollars just keeps getting raises from, we, their employers. They have no idea of what their benefits cost us while we, ourselves, do without. This is why there are tea parties. We have only so much to give while doing without. I won't go on and on. I have learned to live on less by not buying things I don't need with money I don't have. It's not so bad! We are very blessed in this country. We just lack self control when it comes to money. Government needs to control spending just like the average Joe must.

Instead of monday morning quarterbacking every politician...perhaps we shove turn the finger to be pointed at ourselves. We are the ones with the vote. Even though I did not vote for him, I will accept some resonsibility and accountibility. We need to care more before problems start arising instead of blaming and pointing after and just solving the problems.
