Summit County Councilman Tim Crawford, a vocal critic of county spending, won't take a voluntary pay cut this year like his fellow council members.
Council has agreed to give up 6.6 percent of its pay for the remainder of the year as the county grapples with a $14 million operating shortfall. Council members have said it's important to show county workers — many of whom are being asked to take a four-day furlough — that they are willing to share in the financial pain.
But Crawford, who is paid $23,903 a year, said his county check is committed through this year to buying state retirement benefits — a perk afforded to government workers to boost their retirement income and health benefits. His check amounts to $23.50 every two weeks because of the payroll deduction, he said.
The voluntary pay cut amounts to about $60 withheld from each council member's check.
If he agreed to the pay cut, ''I would have to pay the county money to be working,'' said Crawford, who works full-time as an insurance agent. ''I'm not going to write out a check.''
Crawford, a Democrat and former Norton mayor, has been on County Council since 1993. He serves as head of the council's Finance Committee and has been a frequent critic of county leaders not trimming their spending.
He said he will participate in a proposed 8 percent voluntary pay cut next year, when county leaders say workers might be asked to take up to 20 days off without pay.
''Next year, I will be right in line to sign my 8 percent away,'' said Crawford, a district council member who represents Barberton, Norton, New Franklin, Clinton and parts of Coventry Township and Akron.
Council President Nick Kostandaras said he was disappointed in Crawford's decision. The other 10 council members have agreed to the pay cut.
''What can you say?'' Kostandaras said. ''He has to deal with it himself. I've got to show an example.''
The county plans to use reserve funds to plug the operating budget shortfall this year but still wants to reduce spending because tax revenues are declining.
County Executive Russ Pry has announced he wants to trim $9 million in spending next year. County leaders are still working on the 2010 budget.

What arrogance!
The only thing that compounds his arrogance is the fact that elected official get "2 for 1" in the OPERS pension benefits column.
In other words one year of political employment counts as 2 years!
So 15 years on the dole gets you a 30 year pension!
Very easy to change your PERS. Come on Crawford. Think about your employees. You cannot be a critic of a budget you are not willing to help. The insuranece biz must be slow.
Hey Timmy Boy,
We'll remember you come the next election.
pay up like the rest of us...if not, then vacate your seat.
Bad move on his part. Probably just cost him his re-election
Why is anyone surprised by this? Many of these public workers have their heads buried in the trough.
Oh come on people. He needs the money to keep his hair dyed. That and the fact he is a hypocrit. A do as I say not as I do kind a person.
I'm not a fan of Crawford's, but I can understand his reasoning on this. Makes sense.
how about making it up in community servics time? he'd look great in orange!
What a two-faced loser!!
When is this guy up for re-elction?
A swine in more ways than one...
Some people have a miserly mentality. I would hate to deal with him.
he sells insurance what do you expect he from a greedy salesman
Well I can understand . . .
Jim Beam increased their pricing - escorts jacked their prices and services - you can't lease a Mercedes for less than 4 bills - and - his stylist just informed him that Brylcreem just doubled in cost.
Whats a poor bureaucrat to do?
I have no respect for this guy. We don't need "leaders" like this.
nice glamor shot, looks ready for the high school yearbook.
So he's risking all this bad publicity and not getting re-elected for approximately $400? I don't think I want him in charge of my tax dollars.
I am not sure I agree or understand his reasoning. but I love the attacks on his job and of course let's not forgot to throw doctors and lawyers in there. we do nothing to earn our paycheck. it is called years and years and years of education. try it folks, pay like we did to become doctors and lawyers then if you feel like bashing our professions go ahead. until then shut up.
If you cannot take care of your personal finances then you shouldn't take care of our public money.
I thougth it was a voluntary pay cut. Who are the people on this site to accuse? Mind your own business. So, he doesn't want to grand stand like the rest. Good for him. His pay and that of the others have little if nothng to do with the budget. Let's stop the melodrama and charade.
We have these clowns in every town, and they get re-elected year after year because the majority of the voting public is clueless as to who their representatives are and what they stand for.
Gerard
Very funny! LMAO!
''I'm not going to write out a check.''
Then why should we have to write out checks come tax time?
@ Jason12
Sorry if we offended your father . . . I am guessing you are related for you to justify his actions and incompetence?
As I mentioned above, with the increase in Brylcreem, he could probably be able to use one of those large Sharpies for the coloring but he will have to find a less expensive place for his doo cuts. Maybe that will salvage your college fund if he hasn't dipped into that already.
Wow ... He's got that red hair working well with the grey mustache! He must be an Ohio State fan ...
Have heard rumors for years that this guy is a real jerk ... Guess it is true! Hope a bunch of his insurance clients start looking around for cheaper rates on their insurance! And that people remember his name real well when it is time to vote!
What a goofball! Can he say hypocrite?
Hey Jason12, it's clear you don't understand reality or symbolism. Like father like son as they say, the certainly didn't fall far in this instance.
hey watching in Summit county, you must not be a very intelligent lawyer or doctor.
Typical ABJ story - you point out that Brunner is a Republican in a separate story.... but totally 'forget' to mention that Mr. Crawford is a big time DEMOCRAT. And people wonder why I cancelled my ABJ subscription last year during the presidential election....
Sorry - I meant Election Board member Morrison - Brunner is a Dem....
@ Watching In Summit County
I paid a significant amount for my education but I can't think of once where I used the cost factor as a justification for my skills.
I am trying to resolve a situation now on surgery that wasn't done right (can't seem to get the hospital administrators to respond). . . I am sure those doctors paid a lot for their schooling as well yet they sure messed me up.
What a stand-up kinda guy!
remember this and VOTE HIM OUT!!!
I'm sure this behavior speaks well of the politics he bought to the table...
"... but totally 'forget' to mention that Mr. Crawford is a big time DEMOCRAT."
You must not be familiar with the rules. If a politician is caught in a scandal, and you cant find their part affiliation mentioned in the article, they are a democrat. If "republican" is mentioned in a report about a scandal, its typically used as the person's first name.
Vote him out next election and he wont have to worry about not taking a pay cut.
We the government; of this REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC; have successfully elected representatives; that spend money; derived; from Fathers disqualified for affirmative action with white skin, Union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and Americas grandchildren’s children; wages or independent business profit; to pay; Representatives wages; pension, and healthcare; pay for the more stock dividends (money); Hillaryies; Chinese; Foreign and Domestic Investors and Stockholders (money marketers) market quarterly; in the wholesale and retail price; of EVERY product and service; Human Beings use for life; and Government needs; to build, maintain, and operate schools; infrastructure; and provide government services; and national security.
This defiance; of demands; of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, God, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce; Makes free, fair, and affordable commerce IMPOSSIBLE; Makes funding schools, infrastructure, and etc. IMPOSSIBLE; Makes balancing every budget IMPOSSIBLE; Makes union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America’s grandchildren’s children LIFE UNAFFORDABLE; and created the $40 trillion social security and the $9.3 trillion national debt. America’s grandchildren’s children are responsible to pay interest with this debt until they are 18 years old. Then pay the debt with the $7.30 per hour government mandated labor wage.
There is no reason to believe America’s grandchildren’s children that go to bed hungry can afford life; and pay this debt; with the $7.30 per hour; government mandated labor wage; in a hundred million years; with money derived from wages or independent business profit!
Vote Him OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So he's not taking a cut because he's gorging himself on public benefits? Boycott his insurance agency, when you switch, cite economic imbecility of one of their agents.
@ Loren Eberly
I originally thought your comment was a haiku . . . then I realized it was 2,000 characters too long.
Whatever happened to public service for the sake of public service. This guy is doing it for the benefits package, and could care less about the well-being of the county.
Mr Crawford your arrogance knows no bounds. I will remember this when I go to the polls. I hope you enjoy your time in office and the perks, for your legacy is now forever tarnished. I wonder if it worth it? All I can say is I'm ashamed to have voted for you in the past.
@ Loren Eberly: Take your meds and go back to bed. We'll wake you when the revolution begins!

Not only should he be VOTED OUT, his business should be BOYCOTTED!! If you patronize his insurance agency I implore you to change insurance providers immediately
The others stepped up to the plate.
I agree vote him out too and I'm a democrat.
He wouldn't be paying to work, he's padding his retiremnt, his choice.
There's no time and no money left, not to be a team player.
P O S! VOTE HIM OUT!
I agree. Vote him out!!!!
The ABJ story described him as "a Democrat and former Norton mayor."
why's it gotta be about "fat"
I see that a number of you correctly called Crawford's political party affiliation despite the ABJ's rule to never identify wrong-doing by a "Democrat". I will now start taking bets that the ABJ will endorse this guy next time he runs. I'm also taking bets that the ABJ will endorse Democrats 5-1 in the coming Nov.3 election.
Jason12, I know the truth hurts, but perhaps your father will pay for your GED, rather than squirrel everything away for retirement. Keep at it, you'll improve, be encouraged. If you choose to become educated you will be able to learn there is a difference between fact and fiction.
Oops odododod,
"Crawford, a Democrat and former Norton mayor, has been on County Council since 1993."
They clearly identified him, you didn't read the story though.
Tim I'm sure that you have enough moneies. you were a mortician, incurance man and now a county coucilman plus your wife was a nurse . get real and help the county.
Crawford is indeed padding his retirement. This does not sit well with me when the other county council persons have agreed to a pay cut. Although it is voluntary, he could have done the "right thing" for the county by playing nice. Seems I'll be voting against Mr. Crawford if he continues to act like a selfish child.
piccard,
Don't indulge Jason12. That's his thing. He likes to be argumentative and he's especially irritable today. I figure he's got a few more days until his account is blocked and his ohio.com relevancy matches that of real life.
Why are council members allowed to have retirement? And $23,000 is a wee high for a part-time job. P.S. Nationwide sucks!
I love watching how our leaders try to justify themselves. I hope the voters take note.
It is sad that the other counsel members don't pass legislation to force him!
What a sad, sad, sad, politician. Typical County Council nonsense. And this guy is on the finance committee? I hope everyone can do the right thing next election and get rid of as many of these do nothing lifers as possible. How about some people with some honesty and vision? Good luck.
Yeah I rejected a pay cut too.... and got fired! also these stuffed shirts can cut out the falling on the sword act anytime now. Too little too late. Someone left the swines too long at the trough. And since I am flinging insults around. Any wider lense there and they would have had to panorama him.
Last one out of Summit County please turn off the lights.
He's not planning to run again or he wouldn't pull this. So he doesn't care what you say!
He is not doing anything different than the Democrates in Washington are doing.
Just goes to show what intellectuals are running summit county. He obviously flunked public relations.
puco will get the lights for a small fee
thanks to all u aholes who voted 4 obama
I hope all of you card carrying democrates who re elected these bums are happy. Guys like him and mayor are what makes this area great
Hey Laketownship: I see why you cancelled your subscription to ABL, you can't read, it does say he's a democrat. Same for you Rittmaninsider, read the article again. Must be a republican thing, not being able to comprehend what you read. Now I know why they are no longer in power. LOL
Sorry, typo ABJ not ABL
This clown is a hypocrite, always complaining about cutting the budget, then he's not going to do anything to help reduce it. Typical politician, there is no difference republican or democrat.
Robar: you are so wrong, not a piece he is a bucket o s.
HE SUCKS.....................................ALWAYS HAS
Keep your money Crawford. It's yours, you earn it. Unlike most of the unemployed bloggers on this site.
What an A-Hole! The guy needs to take the pay cut and put his wife to work. I know coulples who don't make that much together.
Crawford was just reelected last year. He is not up for re-election until November, 2012. He expects that, by then, all will be forgotten. This is what happens when career politicians with a sense of entitlement are continually elected.
Am I to understand that his pay is less than $25.00 every two weeks because the rest of his pay is socked away for retirement and health benefits. I wouldn't admit to this if I were he. Politians forget how the real world works. In fact everyone paid by our tax dollars just keeps getting raises from, we, their employers. They have no idea of what their benefits cost us while we, ourselves, do without. This is why there are tea parties. We have only so much to give while doing without. I won't go on and on. I have learned to live on less by not buying things I don't need with money I don't have. It's not so bad! We are very blessed in this country. We just lack self control when it comes to money. Government needs to control spending just like the average Joe must.
I think this is a big big reason why we need to enforce our term limits policy......vote these parasites out of office...if they get re elected they are more than likely crooks aka "the Don"
vote them all out of office!
Remember his name and what he stands for in november when you go to vote. NO to him. What a creap!
....And this little piggy got into your pocket.....
He would not be "paying to be working"--that's ridiculous. He would just be contributing toward his own retirement. Obviously he thinks his own retirement is more important than any needs county taxpayers might have.
Crawford is able to sock away over $23,000.00 a year into State Retirement Benefits ... Must be nice!
Veiw larger version ... No thank you ... I'll pass!
Cmon man that 23k is just a perk, your making tons on kickbacks and payoffs.
Hey Todd65, you notice that laketownship cancelled his BJ subscription. He must have been mad. But not mad enough to read it for free. I have to laugh.
Oh, and Crawford is a goof. He has always been a goof. He is a goof in a town of political goofs, which is Norton, by the way.
Good riddance to him.
Did this guy go to Jim Trafficant's barber?
Nice tie though, did he raid the 1970's for it?
Just another whiny Baby Boomer making sure he's got his.
Why all the surprise?
@canoli eater:
Must be a total beeyotch flossing that grill after some tasty spinach dip ...
WOLF001
What does Obama getting elected have to do with this guy and what he is doing? Nothing, except more ignorant hatred spread by misinformed losers like you. And people say that the liberals/democrats need to stop blaming things on Bush. Why, when losers like this spout off about Obama all the time.
DOES NO ONE READ THE ARTICLE AND JUST BASH??
''Next year, I will be right in line to sign my 8 percent away,'' said Crawford
There are onle 2 months left in the year you clowns. IT IS OBVIOUS NONE OF YOU READ!!!!
@ Phoenix, they read it, I suppose it's a matter of principle.
If he's willing to do it then, why not now?
Should have taken the cut just to avoid all this.
Phoenix-then he ought to write the 2 checks out and BE A MAN..........
waaaaaaaaah !
Instead of monday morning quarterbacking every politician...perhaps we shove turn the finger to be pointed at ourselves. We are the ones with the vote. Even though I did not vote for him, I will accept some resonsibility and accountibility. We need to care more before problems start arising instead of blaming and pointing after and just solving the problems.
Is he eligible for the VSP? Maybe he can just sign up for that and vacate his position. Then he won't have to worry about using his income to buy his pension.
I would prefer they earn their increase by slashing costs.
I can't blame you Timmy boy. They want me to cut my expense account too. How dare the citizens of Akron. You know what I say ... There's a special place in **** for them. I suspect we'll be seeing all of them there.
Wow...
Just $60 could go back into the community which you vowed to serve.
Maybe you trolls ought to check out the good the mans done for our county. At least he's a UNITED STATES CITIZEN unlike YOUR VOTED IN PRESIDENTE.
He's more legit than the judges and lawyers on the same bench. And his tie is RED-WHITE-AND-BLUE.
"Crawford, who works full-time as an insurance agent"
A sense of whats right? whats that?
They forgot to mention that council increased their pay by 40% 2 years ago. What bull.County Council should take their pay back to the $10,000 per year that was voted on by the people of Summit County when they created the charter
