By Jewell Cardwell
Beacon Journal staff writer

JoAnn's Professional Touch is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month by providing a year of free cleaning to a recently diagnosed breast cancer patient who is still receiving treatment.

This is how it works. Please submit a short paragraph with your reasons to Joannsprotouch@gmail.com or fax 330-245-1472 no later than Monday.

''Winners will be chosen randomly on Oct. 29 and will be notified prior to our making the official presentation on Nov. 2 at the JoAnn's Professional Touch Akron location,'' a company spokeswoman said.

''Please do not nominate anyone unless she is willing to appear by name or likeness in our newsletter, or public media, and can provide proof of medical condition in the form of a letter from his or her doctor. Please limit your answer to 1,000 characters and include nominee's name, address, e-mail and phone numbers.''

Seminar on abuse

Bake sale for a mom

A huge round of applause for the students at North Akron Catholic School who are falling in line in a mighty way to support someone in the community who has always been front and center in helping others in need.

Christy Bell is a two-time breast cancer survivor who has championed several Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraisers over the years, even putting together her own Step Into the Ring walk team.

''This year one of the students [where her daughter Gia Ingarra attends school] suggested that they raise money to give directly to Christy to help with the cost of chemotherapy,'' said Mary Ann Traina of Tallmadge. ''Christy had done so much with volunteer projects at the school when she was able.''

The students are sponsoring a bake sale Friday and a walk Saturday.

Infant CPR kits

The American Heart Association, Great Rivers affiliate, is Wednesday presenting 100 infant CPR kits to Dr. John Clark, pediatric cardiologist and Arrhythmia Center director at Akron Children's Hospital.

''The idea is to teach families and give these kits to the families who have infants who are high risk,'' said an AHA spokeswoman. ''There are some families who are required to learn CPR before the hospital will release the infant to them.''

Students' good deed

Akron's Forest Hill Community Learning Center is doing its part in growing good citizens for the future.

To prove it, students did something good for the community.

That good deed involved raising $710.54 to donate to Making Strides for Cancer Research.

To celebrate, teachers Marianne Pramuka and Carol Friedman volunteered to let the top fundraisers throw pink whipped-cream pies at them. All in the name of fun, of course.

Self-help for kids

The Akron chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc. is partnering with the Saturday Club of the Boys and Girls Club to present an important three-day self-help series for children and teens called Soul Searching.

These specially funded sessions will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday mornings at the Boys and Girls Club, 889 Jonathan Ave., Akron, with a free breakfast and lunch served to participants. This week, What's Your Image? Having a Vision; Oct. 31, Making It to the Goal Line: Goal Setting; and Nov. 7, Discipline Equals Rewards.

One of the featured speakers, Angela Neal-Barnett, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, author and a member of Jack and Jill.

Friends of daffodils

Major thanks to the second-graders from Cub Scout Pack 3170 from Richardson Elementary School in Cuyahoga Falls who went full speed ahead on a conservation project for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.

''The project involved spreading over 400 pounds of bone meal over the 30,000 daffodil bulbs along the .6 mile trail at Furnace Run Metro Park on Brush Road in Richfield,'' writes pack leader Matthew Day.

''Park manager Craig Lane worked with the Cub Scout group to arrange the project. The boys who participated were Mickey Selinsky, Evan Mazalic, Tyler Johnson, Zachary Day and Brett Erhard.''

Help in hard times

Akron's Second Baptist Church, 690 S. Main St., is hoping for a large crowd of folks who have fallen on hard times for its second annual Second Closet Charity event, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

New and nearly new items — clothing for men, women and children; household goods, toys and more — will be given away.

The event is sponsored by the church's Women of Purpose Ministry.

A team effort

A tip of the hat to Our Lady of the Elms and Garfield High schools' volleyball players who recently teamed up to raise $425 for the Making Strides (Against Breast Cancer) Foundation.

Both teams walked together at the downtown Akron walk before the big game.
