Nearly $200,000 supports programs for physical, mental well-being

The Austin-Bailey Health and Wellness Foundation recently approved grants totaling nearly $200,000 for 16 nonprofit organizations in Stark, Wayne, Holmes and Tuscarawas counties.
Those awards pushed Austin-Bailey's distributions past the $5 million mark since its inception in 1996. The foundation, which began with proceeds from the sale of Doctors Hospital of Stark County, supports programs that promote physical and mental well-being.
Those receiving the latest grants are:
• The Arc of Stark County, $2,500 to Support Community Living Fund of Ohio, which aids adults and children with special needs.
• Faith in Action of Western Stark County, $10,000 to expand free support services to the elderly.
• Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children, $15,000 for an autism tutor, nurse and camp nurse.
• Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, $10,000 to Access Health Stark County to provide medical care to uninsured individuals and families.
• Hammer and Nails, $5,000 to build two wheelchair ramps at homes.
• Holmes County Council on Aging, $6,675 to provide meals for seniors.
• National Multiple Sclerosis Society, $5,000 for equipment and home modification program.
• Orrville Hospital Foundation, $5,000 to address physical and mental challenges of the unemployed.
• Pegasus Farm, $10,000 to support programs for veterans with special needs.
• Southgate School/Stark MRDD, $16,550 to purchase computer-based device for students with special needs.
• Stark County Health Department, $15,000 to support dental clinic.
• Steps at Liberty Center, $9,000 for treatment of chemically dependent men.
• Tuscarawas County Health Department, $37,500 to support dental clinic.
• Village of Beach City, $5,000 to purchase defibrillators for police vehicles.
• Viola Startzman Free Clinic, $35,000 to support certified nurse practitioner program.
• Western Stark Free Clinic, $10,000 for operating support.
The foundation has two grant cycles each year. Deadlines for submitting grants are June 30 and Dec. 17.
