AKRON: A store clerk was shot several times in an apparent robbery attempt Sunday night.

A customer told clerk Surinder Nagra, 19, of Macedonia, that two males were outside the Far Less Food Market, 854 E. Buchtel Ave., behaving suspiciously about 9 p.m., police said.

As Nagra walked toward the front door, two men entered the store, pulled out handguns and demanded that Nagra put his hands in the air.

When the clerk also pulled out a handgun, the suspects allegedly fired several shots, striking the clerk, before they fled, police said.

Nagra was transported to Akron City Hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life threatening, authorities said.

Burglary arrest

GREEN: A 38-year-old Mogadore man was arrested Sunday morning on charges of aggravated burglary and resisting arrest.

The Summit County Sheriff's office reports that a woman locked herself in a bathroom at her home and called 911 about 6:30 a.m., saying a man had broken into her home and was threatening to shoot her.

STARK COUNTY

Fatal accident

CANTON: A Canton man died shortly before midnight Friday when he was thrown from the car he was driving, the Stark County Coroner's Office said Monday.

William Lewis Varner III, 27, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Richville Drive in Perry Township when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the right side of the road. The car came back onto the roadway and went left of center, off the left side of the road, struck a tree and caught fire, the Canton post of the Highway Patrol said.

Varner's cousin, David B. Varner Jr., 22, a passenger in the car, was transported to Aultman Hospital in Canton with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. A rear-seat passenger, Alphonso C. Reed, 18, was taken to Aultman, where he remains in serious condition.

William Varner was pronounced dead at Affinity Medical Center in Massillon following the crash.

None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.

WADSWORTH

Center to close

WADSWORTH: Steiner Center, the hub of the city's recreation services, will close May 31.

The building will be demolished and a new one won't be ready until 2012, but officials say many services will continue.

City council is close to signing an agreement with the Akron YMCA to administer the city's recreational activities in the future.

A plan to provide services until the new building is ready has been made by Assistant Service Director Rob Peters.

The Barberton YMCA and the Society for Handicapped Citizens Center at Seville will be used for aquatics programs. Cardiovascular and fitness training will be available at Wadsworth High School and at the Barberton YMCA.

Group exercise classes will be held at the Wadsworth Center for Older Adults, and community rooms will be available at the Wadsworth Library, Wadsworth Schools, Buehler's Food Market and Ritzman Pharmacy.

All sports leagues will be managed by the YMCA with Wadsworth fields and the high school used as sites.
