GREEN

Park proposed

GREEN: Mayor Dick Norton is assembling a committee, led by Parks Division Superintendent Mike Elkins, to consider a veterans memorial park in the city.

Norton said he would like the committee to determine what such a park would look like and seek input from the community where it should be located.

The mayor said he hopes that the new park can be completed in time for Veteran's Day 2010.

A potential location could be in front of the John Torok Community Center on Massillon Road where a monument, flags and cannon are now situated.

Norton said he would like at least part of a $250,000 grant from FirstEnergy to help pay for the project.

NIMISHILLEN TWP.

Fatal crash

NIMISHILLEN TWP.: The Canton post of the State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash at 9 a.m. Thursday that killed a 54-year-old Malvern resident.

Ronald Rembert was northbound on Paris Avenue when his vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by Floyd Arreguin, 35, of Canton that was entering the Paris Avenue intersection from Easton Street.

The impact caused both vehicles to go off the road into a field. Arreguin's vehicle came to rest on its side. Arreguin had to be extracted from the vehicle by EMS personnel and was transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Rembert was pronounced dead at the scene.
