Canton man, 26, held on burglary charges

Suspect is arrested after allegedly stolen guitar is sold to Fairlawn store

By Gina Mace
Special to the Beacon Journal

FAIRLAWN: A warrant has been issued for a 26-year-old Stark County man accused of selling a stolen guitar to a local store.

Nicholas Bowe, of Canton, is charged with receiving stolen property.

Fairlawn Detective Daniel Clevenger said Bowe is accused of taking a Gibson SG Special guitar to Guitar Center, 3750 W. Market St., on Sept. 17 — the same day it was taken during the burglary of a Massillon apartment.

''He got about $300 for the guitar,'' Clevenger said.

The guitar's owner, Verne E. Davis, 52, visited the store 10 days later to find a replacement. He was stunned to find his guitar had come full circle and was hanging on a wall in the store, just as it had been the first time he bought it a year ago.

Two other guitars, along with computers and recording equipment, were taken during the break-in, according to police reports.

Clevenger said the instrument was sold to the store before Davis had time to file the burglary report.

''Even if [the store] would have checked, there wouldn't have been any record of it being stolen,'' Clevenger said. ''They did absolutely nothing wrong.''

Clevenger praised the store for getting more than the basic information from the seller.

''They took all of the information they could, including a copy of [Bowe's] driver's license.''

Bowe isn't expected to appear in a Summit County court any time soon.

On Tuesday, he was arrested by Stark County sheriff's deputies on charges of aggravated burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held in the Stark County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Bowe is to appear in Massillon Municipal Court on Wednesday.
