STARK COUNTY
Tax break approved
CANTON: Increasing demand for windmill parts is driving the expansion of a Canton Township company that will receive a tax break.
On Wednesday, Stark County commissioners approved tax abatement for Foundation Systems and Anchors, which plans to expand manufacturing capacity at its plant at 2300 Allen Ave. SE.
The company will receive a 60 percent discount for 10 years on the addition to its plant. Construction is expected to total 21,000 square feet and cost $710,000 to $900,000, according to Anthony Codispoti, company president.
The firm expects to hire three to 12 people.
Codispoti said the company's traditional products are large bolts that anchor utility poles and highway signs. It has expanded into providing the rings and bolts that hold the shaft of a wind turbine to its base.
Also Wednesday, commissioners agreed to spend $30,000 in capital improvement funds to dredge Cook's Lagoon in Canton. The Stark County Park District is in charge of the work.
WATERLOO SCHOOLS
EPA to fund lab
RANDOLPH TWP.: A $9,571 Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grant will help the township establish an outdoor laboratory for students and educators in Waterloo schools.
The grant from the EPA's Environmental Education Fund, along with matching local funds, will create an outdoor classroom and laboratory for the school district and local youth groups.
The classroom will be on the 11-acre Randolph School Park.
The township zoning inspector and project director will design the classroom and secure the needed permits.
The construction will be handled by the AmeriCorps VISTA and Portage County residents.
The EPA grants are derived from fines paid by polluters.
Randolph Township was one of 10 grant winners selected by the EPA.
