AKRON

Pedestrian robbed

AKRON: A 24-year-old man told police he was robbed Saturday afternoon while he was walking through a parking lot.

The victim said he was in the 1800 block of Buchholzer Boulevard around 3 p.m. when three males approached him.

One of the males punched him and knocked him down. The others took his debit card and $120 before fleeing.

Circle K robbed
AKRON: Employees at a gas station told police a man with a gun robbed the store Sunday night.

A clerk at Circle K, 997 Brown St., reported that a man entered the store about 8:30 p.m., approached the counter and pulled out a black revolver.

The man then put the gun away, handed the clerk a white plastic bag and demanded money and Newport cigarettes.

The clerk filled the bag with cigarettes and an unreported amount of cash before the man left the store.

The robber is described as a black male with a light complexion. He is 38 to 48 years old, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds.

He was unshaven, had a thin build and was wearing black sunglasses, a tan shirt, black hat, white T-shirt and dark blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 330-375-2490.
 

Trash pickups
AKRON: City sanitation crews will collect trash and recyclables as usual this week.

Although city offices will be closed Wednesday for Veterans Day, trash collection will not be disrupted.

Meeting off
AKRON: The Ward 8 meeting scheduled for Wednesday to discuss leaf pickup and snow removal has been postponed.

Councilman Raymond W. Cox III said the meeting is rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Northwest Community Center, 1730 Shatto Ave.

CANTON

Soldier honored

CANTON: An Army sergeant who died in Afghanistan last year will be remembered with a street named after him.

City Council decided Monday to name an alley after Sgt. Nick Casey.

The previously unnamed alley is between Walden and Shorb avenues and between 22nd and 23nd streets Northwest.

In other action, council decided to pay architect John Picard an additional $30,000 for design work on the City Hall plaza construction project. The additional money will cover the design of a new council chamber.

The entire $2.2 million project will enclose the courtyard to provide more space for municipal court and stop water from seeping into the parking garage below.
 

CUYAHOGA FALLS

Meth arrest

CUYAHOGA FALLS: A 31-year-old Falls resident was arrested after police said they found drugs and items used to make methamphetamine in his home and garage Saturday evening.

Police said they recovered chemical gloves, tubing and hoses, a scale, a pill cutter and packaging materials as well as pills, powders and liquids and drug paraphernalia from Scott T. Sandstrom's property on Eighth Street.

HUDSON

A slippery plan

HUDSON: An ice-skating rink is coming to Hudson this winter.

 

Hudson resident Connie Motter is leading a fundraising effort to buy a 65-foot-by-75-foot portable ice rink to be installed in the open lawn area of First & Main this winter.

The Burton D. Morgan Foundation has approved a matching grant of up to $2,100 for the city of Hudson to buy the liner and equipment to create the ice rink every winter.

The total cost for the one-time purchase is about $4,200.

To donate, send a check to the city of Hudson, attention - Jody Roberts, 27 E. Main St., Hudson, OH, 44236. Checks should be payable to the city.

The deadline for donations is Dec. 4.

STARK COUNTY

Victim identified

NORTH CANTON: A 36-year-old Mentor man died Saturday evening when the motorcycle he was operating ran into the back of a parked pickup truck in North Canton.

Roy L. Semrau II, of Glen Lodge Road, suffered head injuries when his motorcycle hit the truck in the 300 block of Lindy Lane Northwest at 5:43 p.m., said Harry Campbell, chief investigator for the Stark County Coroner's Office.

Semrau's wife, Kathleen A. Semrau, was a passenger on the back of the motorcycle. She was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton, where she remained Monday. Her condition is not known.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet, police said.

Several people witnessed the crash, including Semrau's father, who was riding a motorcycle behind the victim's motorcycle, Campbell said.

Semrau was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Canton, where he was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m., the coroner's office said.

North Canton police are investigating the accident. Stark County Coroner Dr. P.S. Murthy was to conduct an autopsy Monday morning, Campbell said.

STOW

Hearing postponed

STOW: A hearing before the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on a ''mandatory pooling'' request by Beck Energy of Ravenna to drill a gas well on church property in Stow has been postponed until February.

David Beck, corporate secretary of the firm, said the decision will allow the company to continue trying to reach a settlement with the city.

The city and one homeowner who lives near the proposed well at the Stow Community United Church of Christ on Pilgrim Drive have refused to sign a lease agreement to allow the drilling.

Without those signatures, Beck Energy will have to use the mandatory pooling rules to get a drilling permit.

Mandatory pooling allows the state department to issue a permit by bringing those who are opposed into a pool with others who have signed leases for a well.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Panel OKs contract

AKRON: Summit County Council's Public Safety Committee on Monday approved a $1.56 million, two-year contract with Twinsburg Township to provide police protection.

The contract, which would be retroactive to January, would include an option for a third year at $746,195. The sheriff's office would provide nine deputies this year and seven next year to the township.

The deal still must be approved by the full council.

Cancer talk
AKRON: The American Cancer Society's Man to Man Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group meets 7 p.m. Wednesday at Stewart's Caring Place, 2955 W. Market St., Akron.

Dr. Joel Johnson will talk about managing stress.

The event is free.

TALLMADGE

Honored residents

TALLMADGE: The city will honor five residents with a Lifetime Achievement Award at 6 p.m. Thursday in Council Chambers, 46 North Ave.

Tallmadge will honor Barbara Mattern, Lee Crites, Zobby Miktarian, Lewis Orinsby and Paul Warzinski for their contributions to the city.

The honorees will be presented awards for demonstrating acts of service and volunteerism over their lifetimes.

The public is invited to attend the award presentation.
