Family and friends of ''Wadsworth's 13'' are battling via a straight-from-the-heart fundraising campaign to memorialize that city's 13 troops killed in Vietnam.
Wadsworth's Dee (Rohler) Stewart lost her brother, Army Cpl. Sidney Rohler, nearly 40 years ago, on March 28, 1970.
''His best buddy, Ron White, escorted his body home,'' said Stewart, who still has trouble talking about it.
''Wadsworth has never done anything to honor the 13 who were killed in Vietnam. So, seven of us got together to try to raise the money — $3,500 — needed to get a granite bench done for them down at the Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton . . . . . . One hundred percent of what we get will go for the bench and anything left over will be contributed to veterans in some form.''
In addition to Sidney Rohler, the other fallen being memorialized are Alan Trent, Air Force captain (who was finally moved from the missing- in-action column); Cpl. Paul Bachman, Army; Sgt. Robert Bowman, Army; Cpl. Daniel Christian, Marine; Pfc. James Clark, Army; 2nd Lt. David Ferguson, Marine; Lt. Cpl. James Huff, Marine; Pfc. David Mitchell, Army; Sgt. Donald Perkins Jr., Army; SP4 Darrell Lee Reid, Army; Sgt. Bruce Spring, Army; Cpl. Ronald Van Duzer, Army.
Working on the bench project with Dee and Dave Stewart are Ron and Chris White, Kim and Karen Smith and Don Taylor.
Checks should be made out to Wadsworth's 13 and mailed to: 185 Highland Ave., Wadsworth, OH 44281.
Free meals for vets
Hodge's Cafe at 897 Wooster Road W., Barberton, is rolling out the red carpet for that city's veterans today.
Robert ''Hodge'' Hodgkinson, a veteran who owns and operates the restaurant, is serving free meals, lunch and dinner, to veterans with military paperwork or IDs. ''We also go to the local nursing and assistant living homes to feed the veterans there for free,'' said Allison Haught, the owner's daughter. ''My dad just wanted to give back.''
Televisions donated
Military veterans in need of color TV sets are in luck.
Three have been made available from local residents. All three sets, two 20-inch and one 13-inch, are analog and would need converter boxes or a cable or satellite connection. Other than that, I'm told they're in good working order.
Call me at 330-996-3567. The early bird gets the worm. Or in this case, a free TV.
Help for player
Buffalo Wild Wings in Medina, 5050 Eastpointe Drive, is donating 15 percent of its total food sales (carryout orders included) from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to help the family of Kory Wiita, the Highland High School football player who recently fractured three vertebrae in his neck while making a tackle.
Well-wishers are encouraged to sign a card for Kory, who is in Akron Children's Hospital.
''The Highland High School kids are here after every game,'' owner Jerry Franklin said. ''This is just our small way of doing what we can to help out and show our support. We hope everyone tells their friends and neighbors to come on out to rally for Kory.''
Donations will be accepted. A Kory Wiita Benevolent Fund also has been set up at FirstMerit Bank branches.
