AKRON
Burglary arrest
AKRON: An Akron man was arrested Friday in connection with a home invasion and robbery last year.
Hollis A. Huff, Jr., 20, of Kipling Street, was taken into custody at 11 a.m. on Cole Avenue by the Akron Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
Huff was charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and forgery involving a home invasion in the 700 block of Beardsley Street on July 21, 2008.
The victim, a 22-year-old woman, reported that four men entered her house. One put a gun to her head while the others searched the home.
The woman's dog attacked the men before they fled in a waiting car.
The victim chased the men down the street, grabbing the temporary license plate from the car.
Huff was booked into the Summit County Jail.
Shredding day
AKRON: The Kenmore Kiwanis club is helping to organize a free, secure, on-site document destruction day by Shred-It from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 933 Kenmore Blvd.
There is a five-bag-per-person limit. Staples, paper clips and rubber bands are OK. Confidential documents such as old checks, check books, credit-card offers, contracts, etc. will be accepted.
A donation of one nonperishable or personal hygiene item per bag is encouraged for the Kenmore Church of the Nazarene Food Pantry.
STOW-MUNROE FALLS SCHOOLS
Paving contract
The Perrin Asphalt Co. of Akron has been awarded a contract to repair and improve paved areas at Kimpton Middle School in Munroe Falls.
Perrin was the low bidder with a base price of $51,300, and an additional $5,700 was set aside as a contingency fund.
Braun and Steidl, the school district's architects, reviewed the bids and recommended acceptance of Perrin's offer.

Firestone open
AKRON: An open house for prospective students and their families will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Firestone High School, 333 Rampart Ave.
Students in grades 6-8 are invited.
Tours and information about some of the school's many programs, both academic and in the visual and performing arts, will be presented. The school also offers academic clubs and more than 20 varsity sports. Faculty and staff will be present to answer questions.
The school has been rated ''Excellent'' by the state for five consecutive years, and named by Newsweek magazine as one of America's best high schools.

STOW: The Humane Society of Greater Akron will hold a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stow-Kent Plaza, 4301 Kent Road.
Proceeds will benefit animals at the Humane Society shelter.

Speaker named
MEDINA: Betty Zak, an instructor at Cuyahoga Community College, will speak at the American Association of University Women meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday on the lower level in the Western Reserve Building, 3637 Medina Road.
Zak will speak on Women who Made a Difference.
She was an adjunct professor at Notre Dame College for 25 years and is a business information systems consultant with her own company. Zak has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.
AAUW works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
Guests and prospective members are welcome.
