GREEN

Driver, 18, killed

GREEN: Summit County sheriff's deputies and medical examiner investigators were at the scene of an accident Wednesday night at Interstate 77 northbound ramp at South Arlington Road that claimed the life of an 18-year-old man.

Investigators said the accident involved a car and semi-truck about 8 p.m. They said the driver of the car apparently was trying to get on the expressway and lost control of his car when a semi-truck slammed into the vehicle.

The identity of the man was not available.

Police seize heroin
AKRON: After a two-month investigation, police said they broke up a suspected drug ring in West Akron when they executed a search warrant Tuesday.

Authorities said they recovered 70 bags of heroin, $240 and records and documents pertaining to drug trafficking in the 700 block of West Market Street.

JoAnn Colbert, 56, and Ivan Richardson, 59, both of West Market Street, were arrested and charged with drug abuse and drug trafficking. They were booked into the Summit County Jail.

Two men rob bar
AKRON: Two men, one armed with a handgun and the other with pepper spray, robbed a local bar Monday afternoon.

The men entered CW's Bar, 436 E. South St., about 2 p.m. and robbed the manager at gunpoint. The second man sprayed several of the customers with pepper spray, police said.

Emergency Medical Services responded, but the customers refused medical attention.

The men got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police are searching for two black men between 25 and 35. One is about 5 feet, 11 inches tall. The second man is about 5-foot-9. Both weighed about 190 pounds and might have been wearing gray hooded sweatshirts.

Colleges hail mayor
AKRON: Mayor Don Plusquellic recently was awarded the 2009 Urban Hero Award by the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities.

The coalition credited Plusquellic for his ''innovative leadership in advancing model alliances between the city, the University of Akron and other key organizations to revitalize Akron.''

Plusquellic received his award during the 122nd annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities last weekend in Washington, D.C. He also was a panelist in a discussion about university contributions to regional economic development that was moderated by UA President Luis Proenza.

The coalition paid Plusquellic's expenses, said Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth.

HARTVILLE

Village insurance

HARTVILLE: The village council on Tuesday awarded a contract for general liability insurance to Van Nostran Young and Associates of North Canton.

The village will pay $25,326 for $5 million worth of coverage.

The council also voted to dissolve the Mount Peace Cemetery Association and give the facility to Lake Township.

Township trustees and the association requested the transfer. The township will maintain the cemetery.

HUDSON

DNA convicts man

HUDSON: An Akron man was found guilty in the burglary of a Hudson home after DNA evidence linked him to the crime.

A jury Tuesday found Steven Seabeck, 40, guilty of burglary, grand theft and menacing.

Authorities say Seabeck had been part of a construction crew doing work at the victim's home. One night, while the victim was asleep, he woke up to find someone in the house.

The intruder escaped out of a side door, and there was no sign of forced entry.

Hudson police found a blood trail in the basement and on a wall leading to the upstairs bedroom. Authorities also found a print on a bottle the intruder took out of a liquor cabinet.

When Hudson police asked everyone on the construction crew to submit DNA swabs, Seabeck refused.

When his DNA and fingerprints were later checked, they matched the blood and prints found in the home.

MEDINA COUNTY

H1N1 vaccines

MEDINA: The Medina County Health Department is offering free H1N1 flu vaccines for people at high risk of contracting influenza or developing complications from the illness.

The first clinic is 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lafayette United Methodist Church, 6201 Lafayette Road, Medina.

Another clinic will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Cloverleaf Recreation Center, 8525 Friendsville Road, Lodi.

At this time, the vaccines are limited to people in high-risk groups, including pregnant women, people who live with or care for babies younger than 6 months, all people ages 6 months to 24 years, people 25 to 64 with chronic medical conditions and medical and emergency workers.

Children 9 and younger need a second dose four weeks after getting their first vaccine for full immunity.

REVERE SCHOOLS

Buses purchased

BATH TWP.: The Revere Board of Education approved the purchase of two special education buses Tuesday.

Power City International Trucks will sell the buses to the district for $75,814.

The special needs, 47-passenger lift buses will be purchased with federal stimulus funds.

''This is a one-time allocation,'' said Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer David Forrest, explaining that district personnel wanted to use the stimulus funds in a way that would result in no recurring costs.

STARK COUNTY

Officials vote on tax

CANTON: Stark County's general fund will receive the remainder of a 0.5 percent sales tax that is due to end April 1.

County commissioners, in a split vote, decided Wednesday to put half the money into next year's general fund and half into a budget stabilization fund for later use.

The decision pushed aside a competing proposal that Commissioner Todd Bosley supported to put half the money into a fund for improving the 911 call system and centralizing county emergency dispatching.

Bosley has characterized the project as a safety enhancement.

Commissioners Peter Ferguson and Tom Harmon supported keeping all the money for general-fund expenditures.

''Public safety takes many faces,'' said Harmon, noting that general-fund money is also used for ''arresting bad guys,'' trying them in the courts and putting them in jail.

In other action, commissioners approved an oil and gas lease for 36 acres adjacent to the county jail. The three-year lease with Dorfman Production Co. of Dallas includes an annual rental of $1,080 and royalties equal to one-eighth of the gas produced and sold.

WADSWORTH

Land purchase

WADSWORTH: The City Council voted Tuesday to purchase property at the northwest corner of Maple and North Lyman streets for $70,000.

The land, near City Hall, is expected to be used for parking.

The council also held a public hearing on the issuance of $18.9 million in bonds to finance a community center to be built as part of a new high school complex.

Portions of the 66,000-square-foot center will be subleased to the YMCA and local Hospital Association. The YMCA will administer the city's recreation activities, while the Hospital Association is expected to set up a wellness clinic.

WOOSTER

Fugitive found

WOOSTER: The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force nabbed a fugitive wanted in Louisiana in downtown Wooster on Tuesday.

Melanie Marie Hearn, 32, was wanted on a rape charge and for a probation violation for prior cocaine convictions.

Authorities say Hearn faces charges that she witnessed the rape of a 6-year-old and failed to take action against it.

The mayor has time for travel to receive awards but no time to testify at a civil service hearing?

That guy needs to get his priorities straight.
