Coin toss gives Fiala mayoral win in Kent

Automatic recount in Nov. 3 election planned, along with other races

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

A coin toss might have determined the new Kent mayor.

The official vote count showed Jerry Fiala and Rick Hawksley tied with 2,052 votes each.

Fiala won the toss, making him the victor — unless an automatic recount gives Hawksley the edge.

The mayoral race is one of several from the Nov. 3 election in the Greater Akron area that local elections boards will recount. When vote totals are separated by less than one-half of 1 percent, recounts are required.

Other recounts, by county:

• Summit: Akron school board, Bath Township trustee and Issue 42, a charter amendment in Mogadore on the public reading of ordinances. Recounts will begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 1.

• Medina: Medina Township trustee, Lafayette Township trustee and Wadsworth school board. Recounts will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

• Portage: Kent mayor, Streetsboro mayor, Garrettsville council, Windham council and Shalersville Township trustee. Recounts will begin Monday morning.

• Stark: Alliance at-large council, Canton Ward 8 council, Canal Fulton at-large council, Stark Educational Service Center and Issue 20, a North Canton road levy. Recounts will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 3.

• Wayne: West Salem council, Creston council and Chippewa school board. Recounts will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

Several of the races have overlaps with other counties, where results also will be recounted.

The Summit County elections board certified the election Tuesday. The board will certify the recall results Dec. 8.

No voters so far have taken court action to contest Summit County's election results. The elections board ran short on ballots in the election, resulting in long lines and some leaving without voting.

Some voters were hoping for a ''revote,'' but an attorney for the Secretary of State's Office said Ohio doesn't permit revotes, and court action would be needed to challenge results.

In Summit's close races, the official vote count has Ginger Baylor beating Dianna Smith by 157 votes for the fourth spot on the Akron school board and Becky Corbett leading Nadine Clar by 15 votes for the second Bath Township trustee spot. The Mogadore charter amendment is winning by 32 votes.

At the direction of the secretary of state, the board hand-counted all of the races with write-in ballots, but none of the outcomes changed.

The board will conduct a hearing Jan. 12 on a complaint about alleged harassment of volunteers working for Bob Lockhart, a write-in candidate for New Franklin mayor, by poll workers and police at polling places on Election Day.
