• The Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics named Dr. John Duby, a developmental behavioral pediatrician and co-director of the Neuro-Developmental Center at Akron Children's Hospital, as its Elizabeth Spencer Ruppert Outstanding Pediatrician for 2009.
• Sheri D. Smith was named 2009 Dispatcher of the Year at the Ravenna post of the State Highway Patrol. Jonathan A. Ganley was named 2009 Trooper of the Year at the Ravenna post.
• The Summit County Sheriff's Marine Patrol Unit was chosen as the top marine patrol in the state by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Watercraft. Summit County Deputy Patrick Fick was chosen as the Officer of the Year.
• Jon Thomas, a psychologist with Summa Family Practice in Akron, received the Public Sector Psychologist of the Year Award from the Ohio Psychological Association.
• Fred J. Heiselman of Akron was named the 2009 Veteran of the Year by Post 32 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans. He is a U.S. Army veteran and adjutant at the post.
School news
• Anthony Locke, son of Dan and Kim Locke of Deerfield, was accepted into the People to People Student Ambassador Program. The freshman at Southeast High School will visit France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy in June as a member of the Summit-Portage counties delegation.
• Writing major Heather Farr, daughter of Homer Farr of Columbia Station, was inducted into Ithaca College's Oracle Honor Society for her academic achievements.
• Sally Antonucci, a family and consumer science teacher, was named the 2008-09 Teacher of the Year at Tallmadge High School. This is her 34th year at the high school.
• Western Reserve Academy chemistry teacher Marie Fiedler and history and economics teacher Diccon Ong received 2009 Yale Educator Awards from the Yale University Office of Undergraduate Admissions. They were among 36 educators nationwide who were nominated by members of Yale's incoming freshman class.
• Hallie Wolff, daughter of Theodore and Dona Wolff, is president of the Phi Alpha Theta honor society at Ashland University. She is majoring in political science.
• Stacey Cadman, daughter of William and Sandy Cadman of Tallmadge, is secretary of the College Republican Club at Ashland University. She is majoring in history.
• Several Akron-area students were induced into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society at Baldwin-Wallace College: Alison Tomin of North Canton; Meredith Caraway of Wooster; Michael Grater, Jessica Poiner and Sarah Spiker of Stow; Tanya Davis of Hinckley; Victoria Shaw of Litchfield; Nicole Topp of Seville; Donna Sullen of Valley City; Jessica Young of Canton; Megan Smith of Atwater; and Aaron McNair of Twinsburg.
• Kaitlin Krister, a graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, is president of the communication honor society Lambda Pi Eta at the College of Wooster. Krister, of Kent, is a senior majoring in communication studies.
• Medina County Auditor Michael Kovack was inducted into the Wadsworth Senior Advocate Hall of Fame for his contributions to the lives of older adults.
• Bob Hasinki of Stow was named Big Brother of the Year and Nikki Bolea of Tallmadge, Big Sister of the Year, by Big Brothers and Sisters of Summit and Medina Counties. The Distinguished Service Award winner is David Glass of Akron and the Sponsor of the Year, Charles Schwab of Richfield.

• Air Force Airman
Matthew T. Gavin, son of Shawn and Willie Shropshire of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of East High School in Akron.

Joshua D. Maley, son of Rick Maley of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
