Elderly Akron man who fell down embankment may have become disoriented after visiting wife

A man found dead outside a nursing home Monday morning has been identified as an 80-year-old Akron resident.
Frank Biondo had visited his wife in a Rittman nursing home. He apparently was disoriented while walking back to his car and fell down an embankment and died from exposure, authorities said.
Wayne County coroner's investigator Luke Reynolds said authorities waited until Thursday to release the identity of the body because it took a while to notify family members.
Biondo left the Autumnwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center about 9 p.m. Sunday. Wayne Coroner Amy Jolliff has pegged his death at about 9:30 to 10 p.m.
A nursing home employee found the body about 9 a.m. Monday east of the facility, off Sunset Drive.
Family members speculated that Biondo might have become disoriented as the result of injuries sustained Saturday when he fell at home.
Biondo had told his wife of 53 years, Julia, about that accident, while visiting her on Sunday.
Reynolds said Biondo had parked his car near a lamppost in the middle of the parking lot, but was found near a lamppost at the edge of the lot, east of the nursing facility.
''Maybe he was confused about which lamppost he was at,'' Reynolds said.
Biondo's daughter-in-law, Jill Ann, said from her home in Las Vegas that Frank Biondo was an Akron native and a World War II veteran.
She said her husband, Jaime, was traveling to Akron on Thursday afternoon and could not be reached for comment.
Frank Biondo began working as a cake decorator at City Bakery and then found employment in the trucking industry.
An avid golfer, he scored several holes-in-one. After retiring, he landed a part-time job ''doing what he loved'' tending the flower gardens of Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links in New Franklin, said Jill Ann.
Biondo, who also was a starter at the golf course, was known for his flowers at the course and at his home. He was the recipient of several beautification certificates from Keep Akron Beautiful.
''He did the flowers from the bottom of his heart,'' said the course's assistant general manager, Jonathon Thornton.

Man, did I love playing golf with Sport. Just an absolute class act, and one of the nicest, most genuine men that I have ever known.
RIP Sport, we will miss you.
What a sad way to die.
RIP Mr. Biondo; so sad. They should have security guards or police near the parking lot to make sure people get to their cars.
