Obituary
Woman honored by Air Force before her death

Paige Villers graduates with the rank of airman

Beacon Journal staff report

Paige Villers stayed strong until the end.

The 19-year-old Norton High School graduate finally succumbed to complications from pneumonia. But before she did, she was able to graduate with the rank of airman and received her airman's coin.

Villers joined the Air Force last October, and began basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio in March. She came down with a rare strain of adenovirus that was so debilitating that doctors induced a 36-day coma.

In July, while in a wheelchair, she had a special graduation ceremony in which she was also given a Medal of Achievement for her accomplishments before getting sick.

She died last Tuesday, surrounded by family and friends at a San Antonio hospital.

She joined the Air Force because ''she wanted to do something honorable with her life,'' said her aunt, Christina Henry of Coventry Township. ''She desired to do something that would make a difference in her life and this country. She was very patriotic, and she believed that the Air Force would give her the discipline she needed in her life to make something of herself.''

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Northside Christian Church in Wadsworth and at 11 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a funeral at noon at the church.
