Nazareth Housing presents awards
AKRON: Nazareth Housing Development Corp., the faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is building housing for low- and moderate-income families, recently presented its My Brother's Keeper awards.
The following were honored:
Terry Meese For a decade of service at Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority and his work in various community organizations. Meese is teaching sociology at the National Institute of Technology in Cuyahoga Falls and in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Akron.
Deerfield Evangelical Friends Church youth group Nine members of the group traveled to Louisiana in July to help build a home to replace one destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
International Institute The institute has for more than 90 years helped immigrant families secure housing and essential services.
Testa Builders The contractor has completed work on more than 4,500 affordable homes and is known for partnering with nonprofit organizations to make housing possible.
A special award was presented to the Rev. Gordon Yahner, recently retired pastor of St. Hilary Catholic Church in Fairlawn, for his service to Nazareth since its inception in 1999.
Soul-food fish fry to benefit candidate
AKRON: Friends of Effie Stewart, a candidate for the Ward 3 seat on Akron City Council, will hold a soul-food Cajun fish fry from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Village Gathering, 775 Copley Road.
Donations for dinner are $10 to $25, although hot dogs are free for children younger than 10 accompanied by a parent.

Joe McBride featured in Zoo's jazz series
AKRON: The Akron Zoo will host the third concert in the Come Alive Jazz Series from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens.
Joe McBride, who has been part of Heads Up International since 1999, will be the featured musician.
Admission for the event is $10 per person.
Presale tickets are available at the Akron Zoo office or online at http://www.akronzoo.com.
Refreshments and appetizers will be provided.

Open house planned for new classrooms
COVENTRY TWP.: An open house to showcase the new modular classrooms at Turkeyfoot Lake Elementary School, 503 W. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Ten modular classrooms were built at the school to provide the classroom space needed because of the closing of Cottage Grove Elementary. HIRAM
Center will host Hungarian festival
HIRAM.: The Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio, 12027 Abbott Road, off state Route 82, will hold its annual fall festival starting at noon Sept. 9.
Authentic Hungarian food and pastries will be available for purchase.
Music for dancing will be provided from 2 to 6 p.m. Hungarian dancers will perform at 3 p.m.

KSU Aviation Fair Saturday at airport
STOW: Kent State will hold its Aviation Fair on Saturday at the Kent State Airport, 4020 Kent Road.
The fair celebrates Ohio's aviation heritage and KSU's aeronautics and flight program.
The fair starts at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Stow-Munroe Falls Kiwanis Club and a hot air balloon launch at 7 a.m.
The event also will have family activities, including a performances by the Stow-Munroe Falls High School Marching Band.
Food and beverages will be available.
The vintage civilian and military aircraft that will be on display will include a B-17 ''Flying Fortress'' bomber, a B-25 ''Mitchell'' bomber, a CH-46 ''Sea Knight'' helicopter and others. F-15s and C-130 military aircraft will do fly-bys.
Twenty-minute rides on single-engine Cessna planes will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m at $20 per person or $55 for three people.
Twenty-minute helicopter rides will be available for $30 per person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those interested in rides must register at the sign-up tent.

District to recycle home appliances
MEDINA: The Medina County Solid Waste District will recycle household appliances Sept. 10-15 at two locations.
Appliances that will be accepted include refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, air conditioners, hot water tanks, dehumidifiers and small kitchen appliances.
Medina County residents can drop appliances off from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10-14 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the county's Central Processing Facility, 8700 Lake Road, Westfield Township.
Appliances also can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the county sanitary engineer's plant at 2417 Plum Creek Parkway, Brunswick Hills Township.

Man dies after car hits embankment
BETHLEHEM TWP.: A 57-year-old Baltic, Ohio, man was killed in a crash Monday on Sherman Church Avenue Southwest about a mile south of Haut Street.
Viviano O. Quiroga was southbound on Sherman Church shortly after midnight when he drove off the right side of the road, veered back, lost control of his vehicle and struck an embankment and trees, the Stark/Summit post of the State Highway Patrol said.
Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash, and Quiroga was not wearing a safety belt, according to the patrol.
His death is the 23rd traffic fatality in Stark County this year.
The accident remains under investigation.
Stark County MRDD collecting footballs
CANTON: The Stark County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is collecting footballs to be used for an art project celebrating 40 years in Stark County: Home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Anyone interested in donating footballs to the project can drop them off at any of the six Stark MRDD sites. Footballs should be labeled for the Public Information Department.

Discussion set on renaming idea
COVENTRY TWP.: The Portage Lakes Community Council will host attorney Randy Norris as the featured speaker on Why Not the City of Portage Lakes at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Coventry Township Hall.
Norris will discuss reasons to support the renaming of New Franklin to the city of Portage Lakes.

Water district plans to flush hydrants
NORTHFIELD CENTER: The North Hills Water District, which includes Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills townships, will flush hydrants over the next several weeks.

Police messages a security service
WADSWORTH: The Wadsworth Police Department has issued 3,000 ''security-grams'' in the last two years, according to Safety Director Charles Potter.
Police Chief Dave Singleton said the ''security-grams'' are written when a patrol officer spots a garage door open during the night, a bicycle left in the front yard or other valuables left in sight.
Singleton said the messages alert property owners to a potential security issue.
The program is a ''win-win'' for the property owner and the department, Singleton said.

Beer-tasting event to help canal group
ZOAR: The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition will hold a fundraising beer-tasting Sept. 9.
The event, Cavorting on the Canal, will be staged in the village of Zoar in northern Tuscarawas County.
The beer and cheese tasting begins at 5 p.m. in the Zoar Gardens with an assist from the Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at the historic Zoar Tavern for a German meal. A silent auction will follow.
Tickets are $50 a person. Proceeds will benefit the Akron grass-roots group. Call 330-434-5657 for reservations or additional information.
