Firefighters demonstrate value of sprinkler systems

KENT: Matthew Kuwatch, chairman of the Ohio Fire Safety Coalition, and Ed Comeau, publisher of Campus Firewatch, came to Kent State University Wednesday morning to make a life-and-death point to students and parents.
It took them less than 30 seconds to make a profound statement to 300 onlookers.
And they did it in dramatic fashion with the help of Kent State University and the Kent Fire Department.
KSU had constructed stand-alone side-by-side dorm rooms on Manchester Field. Each 8-foot-by-8-foot room had a bed, clothing, posters and all the amenities you'd expect in a college student's dorm room.
A fire was set in each room. The room with a sprinkler system attached was saved in 30 seconds. The room without was fully engulfed in 30 seconds and had to be put out by three Kent firefighters.
''It's National Campus Fire Safety Month and we're here to raise awareness and educate students and parents of students,'' Comeau said.
Kuwatch said 113 students have died throughout the nation since January 2000 as a result of fires and Ohio leads with 14 deaths 80 percent of which are in off-campus housing.
''There are 17 million students enrolled this year,'' Kuwatch said. ''And most of them do not know what to do to protect themselves or friends if a fire breaks out.
''Knowing two ways to get out and checking the door to see if it's hot before opening it can be life-saving measures.''
Kuwatch also encouraged students and parents to make sure smoke alarms and sprinkler systems are available.
Doug and Linda Turnbull of Cincinnati also attended the event. Their daughter, Julie, was one of three Miami University students killed in an off-campus fire April 10, 2005.
''I know Julie would be alive today if the house she lived in had sprinklers,'' her father said. ''What's worse is when the landlord rebuilt the house, he didn't put sprinklers in and he receives $64,000 a year in rent.
''Parents need to make sure the house that their students live in is safe. We think bad things only happen to other people. We thought like that. We don't anymore. Be involved in your kid's decision of where they are going to live at college.'' noweb
