Many local districts are adopting new approaches to better prepare students for college. These include:
Akron: Added an early college program this year, with 100 freshmen taking classes at the University of Akron to earn a diploma and an associate's degree at the same time. This year, will study what needs to be done to better prepare students for life after graduation; this probably will involve getting more students to take the ACT and participate in volunteer activities. Using an ACT-preparation program.
Canton: Third year for an early college program, similar to Akron's new effort. Using an ACT-prep program.
Coventry: Adding more AP (Advanced Placement) courses.
Rittman: Added a career exploration program.
Springfield: A distance-learning lab added in the 2005-06 school year allows students to take University of Akron courses without leaving the high school. Using an ACT-prep program. Holding an annual event to help parents with college and financial-aid paperwork.
Stark County districts: Worked with the Stark County Educational Service Center and local colleges to set up a dual-credit program this year in which high school instructors teach college-credit classes to students in their home high schools.
