Amusement park closes after 119 years. Water park to remain

Sometimes, business and pleasure just don't mix.
That's why the owners of the legendary local amusement park Geauga Lake a Northeast Ohio fixture for 119 years announced on Friday that they have closed it down for good.
The company that bought it four years ago, Cedar Fair Entertainment, will dismantle the rides but continue to operate the water park next door.
Cedar Fair has invested about $25 million in the water park, Wildwater Kingdom, in the last three years and says it is confident that segment of the Aurora operation will thrive.
Attendance at the side-by-side parks fell from a high of 3 million per year to 700,000 last season. Geauga Lake simply couldn't compete with the monster rides at Cedar Fair's primary property, Cedar Point, which is only about 90 miles away in Sandusky.
The rides will be moved to other parks owned by Cedar Fair.
In addition to Cedar Point and Wildwater Kingdom, the company owns 10 other amusement parks and five other water parks, including Soak City at Cedar Point. It also boasts six hotels and an interactive attraction in Las Vegas called Star Trek: The Experience.
In recent years, regular Geauga Lake visitors saw signs that the end might be near. Two coasters at the front of the park, Steel Venom and X-Flight, were moved to other parks. The monorail was torn down because Please see Geauga, 00
