Onetime Akron Area YMCA volunteer Jill Kolesar has been named the organization’s vice president and chief operating officer effective Dec. 1.
Kolesar will replace current Chief Operating Officer Larry Griffin, who will retire Nov. 29. He has served in many leadership roles in his 35 years with the Akron Area YMCA, including executive director of YMCA Camp Y-Noah in Green.
Kolesar, who lives in Cuyahoga Falls, is currently executive director of the Riverfront YMCA in the Falls, one of 11 Akron Area YMCA branches. She also is group vice president, supervising the head of the Nordonia Hills YMCA branch in Macedonia, and oversees the Akron Area YMCA’s childcare programs.
Kolesar began working with the YMCA as a parent volunteer in 1988 and was first employed in 1994 by the organization as a part-time worker at the Riverfront YMCA. She worked her way up to association membership director, overseeing membership at all 11 branches, before moving to the post of executive director at the Nordonia Hills branch in Macedonia. Kolesar became head of the Riverfront branch in 2007.
Kolesar, a native of Bel Air, Md., a Baltimore suburb, received a bachelor’s degree in sociology, with a minor in management, from Youngstown State University.
Doug Kohl, Akron Area YMCA president and CEO, said Kolesar works well with staff and volunteers and “understands all aspects of Y operations and has been effective at fundraising.”
Griffin has served as chief operating officer since 2006. He plans to spend more time with his wife, Diane, and volunteer with the Downtown Kiwanis, including serving as treasurer for Downtown Akron Kiwanis.
