Akron Children’s Hospital’s multimillion-dollar campus expansion is reaching new heights.
The pediatric hospital held a topping-off ceremony Wednesday for its seven-story addition.
When the tower is complete next year, it will house the hospital’s new emergency department and 100-bed neonatal intensive care unit, along with an outpatient surgery center and labor and delivery unit for high-risk pregnancies.
The $180 million construction project started last spring and is expected to be completed as early as March 2015.
The hospital expects to add 175 to 200 new employees, including doctors, support staff, respiratory therapists, environmental service workers and others, when the addition is complete.
The hospital is attempting to raise $50 million in donations to help pay for the project. About $50 million is being funded with hospital reserves, while the rest is being financed with bonds.
