Akron General and Summa health systems are putting competition aside to co-sponsor an event to raise money for obesity research, education, prevention and treatment.
The Walk from Obesity will take place Saturday at Firestone Metro Park, 2620 Harrington Road, Akron.
The seventh walk supports the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Obesity Action Coalition.
The national organizations estimate 93 million Americans are considered obese. Obesity is the leading cause of preventable death and increases the likelihood of developing diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The cost of the walk is $25 for participants who preregister online at www.walkfromobesity.com or $35 the day of the event. Children under 12 are free with a paid parent or guardian.
Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. at the Tuscarawas Shelter.
All registrants receive an official Walk from Obesity T-shirt.
