A 27-year-old Sugar Creek Township man was arrested Sunday for running into a horse and buggy with his pickup truck earlier this month and then fleeing.
The driver of the buggy was thrown from the vehicle by the impact of the crash and taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton, where he was treated for serious injuries.
Christopher Gemma was arrested at his home after authorities received a tip giving them Gemma's license plate number and a description of the damage the truck sustained in the crash, said Lt. Eric Shepphard of the Canton post of the Highway Patrol.
''A patrol officer saw the truck with the same license plate and the same damage description later that day and initiated the stop,'' Shepphard said.
Originally, Gemma denied he was the driver that struck the buggy from behind as it traveled south on state Route 93 between Beach City and Brewster in southwestern Stark County, Shepphard said.
Later, Gemma admitted he was behind the wheel of the red Dodge Dakota pickup truck that crashed into the buggy at about 8:15 p.m. April 12, Shepphard said.
Gemma was arrested at his home Sunday evening and charged with aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence and failure to maintain assured clear distance, Shepphard said.
The driver of the buggy has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Gemma is scheduled to be arraigned in Massillon Municipal Court on Wednesday morning.
