CLEVELAND: Summertime in Northeast Ohio brings all kinds of wonderful outdoor festivals to enjoy. It also brings many an opportunity to break out that roll of duct tape.
Whether you’re reinforcing the handle of a fishing rod, patching a canoe or fastening a broken bikini, a roll of duct tape is a summer essential.
So what could be better than to combine these two pillars of summer?
The 11th annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival in Lorain County, running Friday through Sunday, does just that.
The free festival, held at the city’s Veterans Memorial Park, features carnival rides, fair food, duct tape crafts and contests, live entertainment and other activities.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, starting at Avon High School, there will be a Duct Tape Parade with floats and characters that feature duct tape in imaginative ways.
For families, there will be a kids’ play area and a magic show.
This year, the event includes a duct tape fashion show.
The festival has drawn nearly half a million duct tape enthusiasts from around the country since its debut in its present form in 2004.
The original Duck Tape Festival actually began in 1993 as a citywide summer festival sponsored by Avon-based ShurTech, the maker of Duck Tape brand duct tape.
Hours for this year’s Duck Tape Festival are 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
