PLAIN TWP.: A blown transformer at GlenOak High School affected classes on the first day of the new year, but was replaced.

The district announced classes would follow their regular schedule today.

The problem shorted out the day for most students.

Plain Schools Superintendent Brent May told parents in an automated phone message shortly after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday that students had been moved to the adjacent football stadium because fire alarms were activated.

He said the school lost power about 8:45 a.m.

Maintenance staff traced the cause to the school’s transformer.

“The transformer was giving off just a little bit of smoke,” May said.

AEP Ohio had removed the transformer by 1 p.m.

After it became apparent power would not be restored quickly, the administration started releasing high school students.

May said student drivers were dismissed first. They were permitted to drive themselves and siblings home. Buses arrived about 11 a.m. to transport others. Parents were required to show identification to pick up their children.

“They were all out of the building by noon,” May said, adding that three or four students might have stayed on campus into the afternoon.

Wednesday was the first day of classes for grades 10-12. Freshmen reported to school Tuesday.

The district used Facebook and its web page to communicate its situation with the transformer. Because e-mail systems were down, families were urged to be sure updated phone numbers were available for use in a direct call system.
