A badly decomposed body was found Saturday morning in the Berlin Lake Wildlife Area is believed to be the remains of a Norton man reported missing last month, authorities said.
A group called the Big Creek Search Dog Team was conducting a training session with cadaver dogs when the remains were discovered in heavy bush about 8:45 a.m., said Portage County Sheriff David Doak.
The area previously heavily searched for two days in May in an effort to locate 45-year-old Jeffrey Hathaway of Norton, who was reported missing by his family on May 15. The search was later suspended when the man was not found.
The remains found were of a white male. They were less than a mile from where Hathaway’s vehicle was found last month.
The remains were taken to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and an autopsy.
