2 die in W.Va. plane crash; flight takes off from Akron

Associated Press

Charleston, W.Va.: Two people were killed Friday in a small plane crash near Riverside in eastern Kanawha County, authorities said.

The Charleston Gazette and other local media outlets reported that the plane was on its way from Akron Fulton International Airport to Spartanburg, S.C., when it crashed about 5 p.m.

The pilot of the Piper PA-32 had reportedly asked for help navigating around bad weather.

The newspaper said that West Virginia State Police responding to the crash needed about two hours to find the site with a helicopter.

Police expected the plane’s recovery to take most of Friday night.

A man who answered the telephone at the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the plane’s two occupants were dead but did not immediately have any additional information.
