Akron paramedics took a 14-year-old Garfield High School freshman to Akron Children’s Hospital around 8:30 a.m. after the girl drank a chemical used in developing photographic film, according to Akron Public Schools.
The girl came into the office around 8:15 a.m. saying she didn’t feel well, said Akron Public Schools spokeswoman Sarah Hollander.
The girl initially told a teacher she drank something and threw the bottle away. The teacher went outside the main office and found a small bottle of rapid fixer in the trash.
School officials believe the fixer contains sulfuric acid, a corrosive chemical also found in automobile battery acid, some fertilizers and some toilet bowl cleaners. They called a poison control center for more information while waiting for paramedics.
They gave paramedics the bottle, which still contained liquid.
Hollander said the girl walked out of the school with the paramedics. It was unclear whether the rapid fixer came from the school.
The extent of her injuries was not released by authorities.
