Akron man convicted of murder

Beacon Journal staff report

A jury Tuesday convicted an Akron man of murder in connection with the shooting death last year of an acquaintance.

Randy A. Thomas, 21, will be sentenced Wednesday by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tom Parker. He faces a mandatory life sentence.

Thomas was convicted in the April 13 shooting death of Anthony R. Smith, 21. The Akron man was shot in the chest during a confrontation with Thomas on Seventh Avenue, police said.

Prosecutors say the two men were arguing and took their discussion to Eighth Street where three shots were fired.

Smith died later at Summa Akron City Hospital.
