An Akron man was found shot to death Monday afternoon on the city’s near west side.
Garrick Feaster, 31, suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head, police said. He was found dead shortly after 3 p.m. in a parking lot behind a fitness center and business complex in the 400 block of West Exchange Street.
Witnesses told police they saw a man wearing a blue shirt and cap and tan pants running from the lot north toward Maple Alley and Westwood Place. The man has not been identified, said police Capt. Sylvia Trundle.
Police crime scene investigators were called to the area to collect evidence. A late model Ford F-150 was towed away past a large, growing gathering of family and friends of Feaster.
Liz Cody, the victim’s mother, cried uncontrollably and fell to her knees in grief when she arrived at the scene and learned of her son’s death. She is also the mother of Tyree Feaster, 21, who recently won an appeal of his involuntary manslaughter conviction for the 2007 shooting death of a woman outside the former Cage nightclub in Akron.
Jana DeLoach, an Akron attorney and Cody family friend, came to the West Exchange Street scene and joined the mourners. The family asked that she speak on their behalf.
Feaster, she said, had at least six children, owned several rental properties and recently sold his interest in a nightclub. She said he had past run-ins with the law but was trying to live a straight life through work and his faith.
That effort, she said, brought him enemies, who were envious of his success.
“I feel terrible for his family, his children and all of his friends,” DeLoach said. “He had a lot of enemies, but more friends. He was definitely my friend, and I don’t care who knows that.
“The fact is no mother should see her son killed like this. This was a cold, calculated, premeditated act done in a cowardly and callous way. What kind of person does that?”
