An Akron man who was shot and killed Sunday on the city’s east side was free on bond awaiting trial on rape and kidnapping charges involving a teenage girl.
Angelo Jones Jr., 29, was shot in the abdomen while walking near the 1100 block of Tarson Terrace in East Akron about 4:45 p.m. Sunday. He tried to drive away but crashed at Rosemary Boulevard and Ericsson Avenue, police said.
Jones was pronounced dead at Summa Akron City Hospital.
No suspect has been identified and no motive has been established, police Lt. Rick Edwards said Monday.
Jones’ attorney, Jon Sinn of Akron, said his client was adamant that he was innocent of the rape allegations and was intent on taking the case to trial. A 14-year-old girl said Jones and a second man sexually assaulted her during a gathering in Akron last July.
Sinn said the girl’s family was angry with Jones over the incident.
“The family hated him. They had very strong feelings about his guilt,” Sinn said. “But he swore up and down he didn’t have sex with the girl and he wasn’t taking any plea bargain.”
