An Akron man was killed and his brother was wounded during a shooting Tuesday inside their West Side home, police said.
Police have not released the names of the men, both of whom are in their 20s. No suspect has been identified.
The body of the deceased man, 27, was taken to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy was to be performed. He is the city’s third person this year to die from gunfire.
Police were called to the 600 block of Madison Avenue shortly after noon. One of the victims could be heard mumbling for help during a 911 call, and authorities initially thought the call was related to a medical condition, police said.
Paramedics arrived first and discovered one man injured from gunfire. Police then responded and helped to locate the second victim inside the house.
The injured man, who suffered a gunshot wound to his chin, was able to walk from the porch to a gurney outside. Paramedics took the 21-year-old man to Akron General Medical Center. His condition was serious, police said.
Police investigating the man’s death canvassed the neighborhood, a few blocks south of Copley Road. Officers eventually extended their crime scene yellow tape from the house northward to Garth Avenue and south to Lawton Street.
A woman, who told officers she was the mother of the men, arrived about 1 p.m. and briefly talked to investigators before she was driven to the hospital.
One neighbor who did speak said he did plumbing work for the family, which he said has roots in Tennessee. The family purchased the home in 2009.
“They’re a nice family,” the neighbor said.
