Akron police say man held onto his beer while fighting officer

Beacon Journal staff report

An Akron man held onto his beer while struggling with an officer trying to arrest him Tuesday night following a break-in at a Massillon Road convenience store, police said.

Steven Shanley, 29, was subdued and taken to the Summit County Jail, where he was being held on charges of breaking and entering and resisting arrest.

According to a police report, a 38-year-old man was walking past the Convenient Food Mart, 199 Massillon Road, about 11:30 p.m. and noticed someone trying to break into the business through a front window. Police say Shanley ignored the man’s warnings to leave and went inside, taking a case of Bud Light beer and cigarettes.

The witness called police, and officers arrived to find Shanley climbing out of a store window with the beer and cigarettes. After a brief chase and a struggle in which Shanley clutched a bottle while he fought an officer, Shanley was arrested and taken into custody, police said.
