An Akron man is accused of beating a woman with a club after she failed to pay for gas after he drove her to buy alcohol, police said.

Frank Simmons, 44, is being held in the Summit County Jail on a charge of felonious assault.

Police say Simmons used a club and struck a 35-year-old woman over the head several times after becoming angry for not receiving gas money after driving her and a companion to a gas station store where they purchased alcohol Saturday night.

The woman fell to the ground and was bleeding profusely from the forehead, police said. She lost consciousness outside the store in the 1500 block of South Hawkins Avenue, according to a report.

She was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment and later released.

Simmons was arrested on a warrant Sunday.
