Akron police are investigating a crash Friday morning that left one woman dead.

The driver, Carla Mitchell, 28, of North Highland Avenue in Akron, died at Akron General Medical Center.

Officers were called to the one-car accident around 10 a.m. on Aqueduct Street near Doyle Street and Mount Peace Cemetery.

Investigators said Mitchell, driving a 2000 Dodge Neon, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when her car left the roadway and struck a tree.

Mitchell and a passenger were trapped inside the car.

The passenger was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital and is listed in serious condition.

Police said neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed appear to have contributed to the crash, police said.
