Beacon Journal staff report
An Akron woman is in critical condition after she was shot late Monday on the city’s West Side.
The woman, 21, is being treated at a local hospital. No suspect has been identified.
Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said the woman was one of at least six people inside a 1997 Chevrolet van. When the vehicle reached the intersection of Madison and Garth avenues, the victim was shot once from a gun fired inside the van, he said.
At least two women inside the van accompanied the victim to the hospital while the van’s driver fled. The van was recovered early Tuesday morning.
Edwards said the shooting is not related to a shooting death of a man that took place last week inside a home on Madison Avenue. Monday night’s shooting took place about 10 houses away from the earlier shooting that centered around a dispute among relatives.
