Barberton Brookside golf club hit by fire

Beacon Journal staff report

NORTON: Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a fire late Thursday that destroyed a large storage building at the Barberton Brookside Country Club in Norton.

Norton Fire Chief Mike Schultz said an initial call was received at about 8:30 p.m. that there was a fire at the maintenance building off Golf Course Drive and west of the main clubhouse.

Brookside is near the interchange of I-76 and state Route 21.

“The fire was already through the roof” when firefighters arrived, Schultz said. “It is a total loss.”

The chief said fire fighters took a defensive stance in fighting the fire. It’s a wooden barn with metal framework. He said fighting the fire was complicated because it was full of golf carts and other maintenance equipment.

There were several explosions but there were no injuries.

He said Norton called for mutual aid from several departments and as of 10:30 p.m. didn't have a complete list of who all responded.

“The building unfortunately is a total loss.”

The clubhouse, he said, was never in danger.
